United States Natural Wine

The United States natural wine scene is one of the most dynamic in the world, led by California but reaching Oregon, New York, and pockets of energy well beyond.

California sets the pace. Winemakers in Sonoma, Mendocino, Santa Cruz, and the Sierra Foothills are reimagining what California wine can be: lighter, fresher, and far less alcoholic than the Napa blockbusters of the previous generation. Earlier picking, native-yeast fermentation, and a lighter touch in the cellar have become the new house style for a whole community of growers.

The movement stretches well past the West Coast. Oregon's Willamette Valley is a cool-climate home for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Gamay, with many estates farmed biodynamically. New York's Finger Lakes turns out precise Riesling and Cabernet Franc from steep lakeside slopes, and there are pockets of natural winemaking in Texas, Michigan, Vermont, and beyond. The range spans crisp whites to structured reds and plenty in between.

What connects them is a young, energetic ethos: organic and dry-farmed vineyards, native yeast, and minimal sulfur. American natural wine has grown from a niche into one of the most exciting parts of the natural wine world.

If applicable, please consider delivering the package to a business address to ensure someone is available to sign for the package.

We also have the option of delivering the package to a Carrier's store for pickup. Please reach out to us to coordinate.

Carrier will try to delivery a package up to three times before returning the package to us.

California leads, especially Sonoma, Mendocino, Santa Cruz, and the Sierra Foothills. Beyond it, Oregon's Willamette Valley and New York's Finger Lakes are important, with smaller pockets in Texas, Michigan, Vermont, and elsewhere.

Oregon's Willamette Valley is a cool-climate region best known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with Gamay increasingly popular. It has a strong concentration of organic and biodynamic estates, making it a natural wine hub.

The Finger Lakes in New York is known for Riesling and Cabernet Franc, grown on steep slopes above deep lakes that moderate the cool climate. It produces some of the most precise cool-climate wines in the country.

It relies on organic or dry-farmed vineyards, native-yeast fermentation, and minimal additions, usually with less new oak and lower alcohol. The goal is freshness and a sense of place rather than power and ripeness.

A wide spread: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay, Riesling, and Cabernet Franc, plus old-vine Zinfandel and Carignan in California field blends. Cooler regions favor aromatic whites and lighter reds.

Most begins with organic or dry-farmed fruit, even when it is not formally certified. Certification varies by producer, but clean farming and low-intervention winemaking are the shared foundation.
