German Wine

Germany is one of the most underrated natural wine countries in the world, far more than the sweet Riesling cliche, with a deep bench of organic and biodynamic growers.

Read more about German natural wine

The old image of Germany as a source of sweet wine is long out of date. Most quality German wine today is dry, labeled trocken, and Riesling is only the start. Spatburgunder, the German name for Pinot Noir, has become world-class, alongside Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, and the underrated Silvaner. Behind them is a serious community of growers working biodynamically and pushing into low-intervention whites and reds.

Terroir does a lot of the work here. The Mosel's steep slate slopes, the Nahe's patchwork of volcanic and mixed soils, the warmer Pfalz, the river-influenced Rheingau, and the Pinot heartland of Baden each give wines of striking character. Cool-climate acidity keeps them precise and age-worthy, and the best growers work with the lightest possible hand.

For natural wine drinkers, Germany offers something distinctive: clarity, minerality, and tension rather than weight. Many bottles are also naturally lower in alcohol and low in sulfur, which makes this one of the most rewarding corners of the natural wine world to explore.

No. That reputation is decades out of date. The majority of quality German wine today is dry, marked trocken on the label, including most of the serious Riesling. Sweet styles still exist, but they are now the exception rather than the rule.

Riesling leads, but Germany also excels with Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir), Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), and Silvaner, along with Muller-Thurgau and others. The range is far wider than most people expect.

Spatburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir. Germany is now one of the world's largest and best producers of it, especially in Baden, the Pfalz, and the Ahr, making elegant, cool-climate reds.

Across the classic regions: the Mosel, Nahe, Pfalz, Rheingau, Baden, and Franken. Each has distinct soils and climates, from the Mosel's steep slate to Baden's warmer Pinot country.

Trocken is German for dry. On a label it tells you the wine is made in a dry style, with little or no residual sugar. It is the most common style for modern German quality wine.

Germany has one of Europe's strongest organic and biodynamic scenes, and many of its most respected growers are certified. Clean farming plus cool-climate precision is a big part of what makes these wines compelling.
