Tasting notes

Shell Creek's fossil-rich limestone subsoil gives this Chenin Blanc a saline, mineral spine that keeps the citrus and white peach fruit from reading as soft. At 11% ABV with no dosage and no disgorging, it is as unmanipulated as California sparkling wine gets.

Broc Cellars sources this 100% Chenin Blanc from Shell Creek Vineyard, located 20 miles east of the town of Paso Robles in the Highlands District. The vineyard was planted in 1972 by the Sinton family, who have farmed the 120-acre property without pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers since the late 1800s. The soils are sandy on top with a subsoil of calcareous fossilized marine limestone, a profile that runs through the creekbed the vineyard takes its name from.

The pet nat method means fermentation starts in tank and finishes in bottle, trapping carbon dioxide as natural bubbles. At Broc, the grapes are given brief skin contact before being pressed directly into stainless steel, where native yeast fermentation begins. The wine is transferred to pressurized tanks while still slightly sweet, then hand-bottled with no disgorging and no dosage. Light sulfur is added at bottling only.

At 11% ABV, this is a low-pressure, lightly sparkling white that drinks dry. Expect citrus and orchard fruit on the nose with a mineral thread that reflects the fossil-rich limestone underneath Shell Creek's sandy soils. The finish is clean and brisk, with the refreshing snap typical of Chenin Blanc grown at elevation.

The dry, high-acid profile works well with raw oysters, briny shellfish, or lightly dressed ceviche. It also cuts through fried foods cleanly, making it a reliable match for fried chicken or tempura vegetables. Serve well-chilled at around 45F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Broc Cellars

Broc Cellars was founded by Chris Brockway, who began making wine in 2002 from a single barrel and had its first official commercial release in 2006. Brockway grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, studied philosophy at the University of Nebraska, then pursued oenology at UC Davis and completed his degree at Fresno State. The winery is based in Berkeley, California, in an industrial space in the city's Gilman District, operating as an urban négociant sourcing fruit from organically farmed vineyards across California.

Broc sources exclusively from sustainably, organically, or biodynamically farmed vineyards. The winery does not own most of its fruit sources, though in 2021 Brockway took over farming operations at Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino County and officially purchased the 60-acre, CCOF-certified organic site in 2023. For the Shell Creek Chenin Blanc, the vineyard is SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certified and farmed without pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers.

All Broc wines are made using spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and bacteria only. No nutrients, commercial yeast, enzymes, tannins, or other fermentation agents are added. Sulfur is never added during fermentation or aging; a small amount may be used at bottling depending on the wine and vintage. The sparkling Chenin Blanc is made as a pet nat: brief skin contact, direct press to stainless steel, native fermentation in tank, then transfer to pressurized tanks while still slightly sweet to finish fermentation in bottle. The wine is hand-bottled with no disgorging and no dosage.

Wine region

Paso Robles, USA

Paso Robles sits roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on California's Central Coast, in San Luis Obispo County. The broader AVA spans more than 600,000 acres and is divided into 11 sub-appellations with distinct soil types and climates. The Paso Robles Highlands District, where Shell Creek Vineyard sits, is the highest-elevation sub-AVA in the region, with vineyards ranging from 1,160 to 2,086 feet. At 33 miles from the Pacific Ocean, it lies in a double rain shadow cast by both the Santa Lucia and La Panza ranges, resulting in warm days, significant diurnal temperature swings, and low rainfall averaging around 12 inches per year.

The Highlands District covers 60,300 acres and is the second-largest sub-AVA in Paso Robles, yet it contains relatively few wineries or tasting rooms, functioning largely as a source region. Its soils are predominantly sandy loam along creek beds, with alluvial fans and hillsides of coarse sandy loam to clay loam, and subsoils often cemented by calcium carbonate over iron-based clay. Viticulture in the district dates to 1972, when Shell Creek Vineyard and Shandon Hills Vineyard were planted. The elevated, continental conditions favor varieties that retain natural acidity under warm growing temperatures, including Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and Valdiguie.
