Tasting notes

Carbonic maceration pulls out vivid cranberry, wild strawberry, and fresh raspberry with almost zero tannin grip, making this one of the easiest-drinking reds we carry. At 12.5% ABV, it behaves more like an amped-up rosé than a traditional red, which makes it genuinely useful at the table.

  • Similar To: For fans of Beaujolais Nouveau, Gamay, and light Grenache who want a California take on the style

Valdiguié is a red grape from southwestern France that spent most of the 20th century being misidentified in California as "Napa Gamay." DNA analysis in 1980 confirmed it is not Gamay at all, though it shares the same broad style: low alcohol, high acidity, and a tendency to produce deeply colored, fruit-forward reds at relatively light body weights. Cruse sources this fruit from Suisun Valley, a small AVA in Solano County nested within the larger North Coast AVA, where warm days and cooling afternoon marine breezes off San Pablo Bay allow the grape to retain its naturally sharp acidity.

The 2018 Nouveau is made via carbonic maceration, the same technique used in Beaujolais Nouveau production, in which whole intact grape clusters ferment inside a CO2-rich environment. Fermentation begins inside each unbroken berry before any crushing takes place. The result is a wine that is extremely low in tannin, lively in texture, and loaded with primary red-fruit character: fresh raspberry, cranberry, and wild strawberry, with a faint peppery note typical of the variety.

Michael Cruse operates out of a warehouse facility in Petaluma, Sonoma County, where he ferments with native yeasts and bottles without fining or filtration. The Nouveau is designed to be drunk young and cold, much like its Beaujolais counterpart, rather than cellared. At 12.5% ABV, it sits comfortably on the light end of the red wine spectrum.

Grapes are sourced from organically farmed sites. The wine is unfiltered and unfined, made with minimal additions.

Serve slightly chilled at around 55F alongside charcuterie, roast chicken, or salmon rillettes. The low tannin and high acidity also make it a natural match for dishes with some acidity of their own: tomato-based pasta, lentil salads dressed with vinaigrette, or pickled vegetables. Avoid heavily tannic or smoked preparations that would overshadow the wine's delicacy.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cruse Wine Co.

Michael Cruse was born in San Francisco and studied biochemistry at UC Berkeley. A lecture by Terry Leighton, founder of Kalin Cellars, redirected him toward wine. Rather than completing a graduate program at UC Davis, he took a cellar position at Sutter Home and later worked his way up to associate winemaker at Starmont in Carneros. In 2008, he taught himself traditional-method sparkling wine production using a 19th-century French manual and launched Ultramarine, which has since become one of California's most sought-after sparkling wine labels.

In 2013, Cruse left Starmont and leased a warehouse in Petaluma where he launched Cruse Wine Co. The project is focused on still and sparkling wines from varieties he considers underexplored in California: Valdiguié, Tannat, Carignan, Syrah, and St. Laurent. The San Francisco Chronicle named him Winemaker of the Year in 2016. All grapes for Cruse Wine Co. are sourced from single sites, and Cruse maintains long-term partnerships with organic growers across Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and the Sierra Foothills.

Fermentations at Cruse Wine Co. are spontaneous, using native yeasts in a variety of vessels including stainless steel, wooden tanks, and concrete. None of the wines are fined or filtered. Red wines sometimes incorporate whole-cluster fermentation. The Nouveau is produced via full carbonic maceration, bottled early, and intended for immediate consumption. All production and sparkling wine handling takes place in-house at the Petaluma facility.

Wine region

North Coast, USA

Suisun Valley is a small AVA in Solano County, roughly eight miles long and three miles wide, established in 1982 as California's 12th viticultural area. It was folded into the North Coast AVA in 1983 alongside Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties. The valley floor sits at around 200 feet elevation and rises to over 2,000 feet at its hillside edges. Soils on the valley floor are alluvial, with four identified types: Brentwood clay loam, Rincon clay loam, San Ysidro sandy loam, and Sycamore silty loam. The climate is semi-coastal Mediterranean, with cool moist winds blowing inland from San Pablo Bay and Suisun Bay almost continuously from May through early fall. Unlike coastal Sonoma or Marin, fog rarely penetrates the valley because the George Range shields it from direct Pacific influence, resulting in warm, sun-filled days and cool nights.

The Suisun Valley AVA currently has approximately 3,000 acres under vine across more than 20 grape varieties. It is best known for Petite Sirah and aromatic whites, though Valdiguié, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc are also grown here. Much of the fruit harvested in Suisun Valley is sold to Napa and Sonoma producers for use under the broader North Coast appellation. The valley's combination of long growing-season sunshine and significant marine cooling allows varieties that retain natural acidity, such as Valdiguié, to ripen fully without losing freshness.
