Tasting notes

Old-vine Carignane from dry-farmed, 90-plus-year-old vines in Redwood Valley produces a rosé with real structure and grip behind the pale color — melon, rhubarb, and warm stone rather than candy. The direct-press method and native-yeast fermentation in a mix of neutral French oak and stainless steel give the wine texture without weight.

This dry rosé is sourced from 90-plus-year-old, head-trained, dry-farmed Carignane vines at Hawkeye Ranch in Redwood Valley, Mendocino. The vineyard sits at 722 feet elevation in the upper reaches of the Russian River drainage, planted on Pinole Gravelly Loam soils that are iron-rich, rocky, and free-draining. Pete Johnson and his family have farmed Hawkeye Ranch organically for five generations; the site is CCOF Certified Organic and Fish Friendly Farming Certified.

Winemaker Jason Charles used a direct-press approach, producing the wine's characteristically pale color. Fermentation proceeded with native yeast in a combination of older French oak and stainless steel. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Redwood Valley's large diurnal temperature swings, often reaching 50 degrees Fahrenheit between day and night, preserve the natural acidity and floral lift that define this wine.

Carignane is a variety that can be aggressively tannic and high-acid from young vines, but from 90-plus-year-old, low-yielding, dry-farmed vines the grape delivers balance and texture well suited to rosé production. The result is pale, dry, and mineral-driven with red fruit and stone-fruit character.

Vinca Minor produces small-lot wines across Northern California, working exclusively with organically farmed growers and using indigenous yeast throughout, never fining or filtering. SO2 additions are minimal.

Works well alongside grilled fish, shellfish, or a simple herb-roasted chicken. The wine's natural acidity and light structure also hold up to dishes with some richness, such as salmon rillettes or a light goat cheese tart. Serve well chilled at around 48-52°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Vinca Minor

Jason Charles founded Vinca Minor in 2013 in Berkeley, California. Charles came to winemaking through an earlier career as a photojournalist, working in Mexico City and Europe before moving to New York where exposure to European wines in the Manhattan restaurant industry shifted his focus. He relocated to Northern California, completed a harvest internship, then traveled to Château Haut Goujon in Lalande de Pomerol to continue his studies before returning to work at Napa wineries prior to launching his own label.

Vinca Minor works exclusively with small growers farming organic, dry-farmed, old-vine sites, primarily in Mendocino. The label's longest-running and most central partnership is with the Johnson family at Hawkeye Ranch in Redwood Valley, a fifth-generation farming family who grow grapes and pears on organically certified, Fish Friendly Farming Certified land. Old-vine Carignane from Hawkeye Ranch has been the foundation of Vinca Minor since its first vintage.

In the cellar, Charles works with indigenous yeast on all wines, never fines or filters, and racks only once before bottling. For the Carignane Rosé, fruit is direct-pressed, producing a pale color, and fermented in a combination of older French oak and stainless steel. SO2 additions are minimal. Production is small-lot across all wines.

Wine region

Mendocino, USA

Redwood Valley AVA sits in the upper reaches of the Russian River drainage in east-central Mendocino County, with vineyard elevations on the valley floor ranging from 750 to 900 feet above sea level. The valley floor sits approximately 200 feet higher than the surrounding area and takes its name from the redwood forests that border it. The climate is an inland Region II on the UC Davis Winkler scale, warmer and drier than the coastal Anderson Valley to the west, but moderated by a gap in the coastal ridge that allows cool Pacific air to penetrate in the evenings. Diurnal temperature shifts at Hawkeye Ranch commonly reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit, supporting slow, steady fruit maturation and natural retention of acidity.

The dominant soils in Redwood Valley are Pinole Gravelly Loam, a well-drained alluvial soil type containing sandstone, shale, and quartz that is deficient in organic matter and low in vigor, naturally limiting vine yields. Redwood Valley was established as an AVA in 1983 and is one of Mendocino County's longest-standing appellations. Mendocino County leads California in the percentage of organically farmed vineyards, with nearly 25 percent of cultivation grown organically, and a substantial number of Redwood Valley producers farm to organic or certified organic standards. The AVA's red soils and warm days produce structured, concentrated red wines from Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignane.
