Tasting notes

This is a direct reference to the skin-contact Sauvignon Blancs of Friuli, made in Oregon with Columbia Gorge fruit and minimal intervention. Stone fruit and dried tea meet a saline, pithy finish that Sauvignon Blanc almost never delivers in its conventional form. The tannin structure and low SO2 give it a grip and complexity that rewards food pairing over sipping alone.

Holden Wine Company is Sterling Whitted's Portland-based label, founded in 2011. Whitted modeled this wine on the skin-fermented Sauvignon Blancs of Friuli, where extended maceration transforms the grape's bright citrus character into something altogether more textural and savory. Grapes are sourced from the Columbia Gorge AVA in Oregon, a transitional climate corridor straddling the Columbia River along the Oregon-Washington border, with vineyard elevations ranging from near sea level to 2,000 feet and soils of volcanic origin, lahar, loess, and silt.

The wine sees extended skin contact, which pulls tannin and phenolic structure from the grape skins and shifts the color from pale straw into amber-gold territory. Fermentation is with native yeast, and SO2 additions are kept to a minimum, consistent with Whitted's low-intervention approach across the entire Holden lineup.

The resulting wine sits at 13.5% ABV and carries the weight and grip of a light red alongside the acidity characteristic of Sauvignon Blanc. Stone fruit, dried tea, and a faint saline edge are typical of this style. The 2016 vintage was widely considered a classic growing season for Oregon.

The tannin and acidity here cut through fatty, umami-rich foods well. Serve with charcuterie, aged hard cheeses, or a roast chicken with herbs. The saline edge on the finish also works well alongside briny foods like olives, anchovies, or miso-glazed fish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Holden Wine Company

Holden Wine Company is Sterling Whitted's label, founded in 2011 and based in Portland, Oregon. Whitted worked harvests at Owen Roe, Cameron, and Teutonic Wine Company and studied enology at Oregon State University before launching the project. He later worked out of Cooper's Hall in Portland and subsequently shared space at Medici in Newberg.

The winery is oriented toward Northern Italian grape varieties, including Dolcetto and Vermentino, which are rare in Oregon. Whitted traveled to Northern Italy, particularly the appellations of Friuli, and those visits shaped his approach to skin-contact whites. Fruit is sourced from vineyards across Oregon, selected for both well-known sites and under-the-radar plots growing uncommon varieties.

All fermentations at Holden use native yeast, and SO2 use is kept to a minimum. For non-skin-contact whites, Whitted practices hyperoxidation at the crush pad as a substitute for early sulfur additions. The skin-contact Sauvignon Blanc is finished in a combination of stainless steel and neutral barrels after maceration.

Wine region

Columbia Gorge, USA

The Columbia Gorge AVA, established in 2004, spans roughly 186,610 acres along the Columbia River on the border of Oregon and Washington, about 60 miles east of Portland. The AVA is the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Mountain Range, and persistent winds averaging 10 to 20 miles per hour act as a cooling and drying force across the vineyards. Vineyard elevations range from near sea level up to 2,000 feet, creating significant temperature variation across sites.

The climate in the Columbia Gorge is categorized as transitional. The western end near the Cascades receives around 36 inches of rain annually and carries a marine influence; the eastern end transitions to continental high desert with as little as 10 inches per year. Predominant soils are volcanic, lahar, loess, silt, and sand, shaped in part by the Missoula Floods approximately 15,000 years ago. This range of conditions allows the AVA to support an unusually wide variety of grapes, from cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the west to Tempranillo and Syrah in the drier east.
