Giuseppe Quintarelli

Quintarelli Bianco Secco Ca' del Merlo 2024

Regular price $150.00
  • Style: Medium-bodied dry white with fresh acidity, mineral definition, and textural complexity; 12.5% ABV; best consumed within 3–5 years of vintage, though structured enough to develop further
  • Grapes & Terroir: Approximately 70–80% Garganega, with Trebbiano Toscano, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Saorin (local name for Friulano); Ca' del Merlo single vineyard in Negrar, iron-rich limestone over basaltic bedrock, around 500 meters elevation, Valpolicella Classico
  • Winemaking: Co-fermentation of all varieties; majority aged in stainless steel and glass on extended lees; small portion aged in neutral oak; a small fraction of air-dried grapes from the estate's Passito Amabile del Cerè incorporated into the final blend; organic farming; native yeast fermentation
  • Serving Temperature & Decanting: Serve at 50–54°F; no decanting required, though 15–20 minutes in the glass will open the aromatics considerably
  • Pairing: Risotto al radicchio trevigiano
  • Similar To: Drinkers familiar with Soave Classico, particularly single-vineyard Garganega-dominant wines from the Soave hills, will find familiar structure and mineral tone here

Bianco Secco Ca' del Merlo shows citrus zest, white flowers, and mineral notes from the volcanic basalt terroir. Serve chilled at 45-48°F without decanting. The wine's lean structure and crisp acidity pair naturally with risotto alla milanese. Similar to high-quality Soave Classico, this Veneto white offers complexity within a dry, mineral-driven framework that rewards immediate enjoyment or short-term cellaring.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Giuseppe Quintarelli

The Giuseppe Quintarelli estate is located in the village of Cerè in the municipality of Negrar, within the Valpolicella Classico zone, north of Verona. Silvio Quintarelli established the estate in 1924, having previously farmed vines on a sharecropping basis in Marano di Valpolicella. His son Giuseppe, known throughout the region as Bepi, took over operations in the early 1950s and ran the estate until his death in January 2012 at age 84. The estate today is led by his daughter Fiorenza and her husband Giampaolo Grigoli, together with their sons Francesco and Lorenzo.

The property covers approximately 12 hectares on the eastern slopes of the Negrar valley at around 500 meters elevation. Vines are trained in the traditional Veronese pergola system and farmed organically. The full range of varieties planted includes Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Garganega, Trebbiano Toscano, Saorin, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Annual production across the entire range is approximately 60,000 bottles.

The Bianco Secco Ca' del Merlo is the only dry white wine produced at the estate. It stands apart from the red wine range in its winemaking approach, relying on stainless steel and glass vessel aging and extended lees contact rather than the long oak aging that defines the Valpolicella, Amarone, and Ca' del Merlo red. That said, it shares the same single-vineyard fruit source and the same organic, native-yeast approach that runs across the entire portfolio. The estate has no website and carries out no formal marketing.

On Primal Wine, the Quintarelli range also includes the Quintarelli Rosso Ca' del Merlo 2018, the Quintarelli Rosso Ca' del Merlo 2017, the Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi 2016, and the Quintarelli Valpolicella Classico Superiore. Explore these alongside other benchmark bottles in our best-sellers collection.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

The Veneto is Italy's highest-volume wine region by output, though its most historically significant wines come not from the plains but from a series of hillside zones north and west of Verona. Valpolicella, the zone most closely associated with the Giuseppe Quintarelli estate, sits in the western Veneto, on basalt and limestone hills between the Lessini Mountains and the Adige River plain. Within Valpolicella, the Classico zone, which covers the valleys of Fumane, Marano, and Negrar, is considered the historical core.

The Negrar valley, where Quintarelli's vineyards are located at around 500 meters above sea level, is characterized by iron-rich limestone soils over a base of basaltic rock. This combination of calcareous and volcanic parent material contributes both the mineral structure and the textural weight found across the estate's range, including its whites. Vineyards at this altitude benefit from cooler nights, which preserves natural acidity and aromatic definition in white varieties.

The Veneto's white wine identity is defined primarily by Garganega, the grape at the heart of both Soave DOC to the east and the Ca' del Merlo vineyard in Negrar. Soave Classico, the historic heartland of this variety, runs along volcanic and limestone ridges between Verona and Vicenza and has become one of Italy's most closely watched white appellations. Garganega produces wines with white stone fruit, almond, mineral salinity, and a structural bitterness on the finish that makes them particularly food-compatible.

Beyond Soave and Valpolicella, the broader Veneto IGT classification allows producers like Quintarelli to work outside DOC constraints, blending varieties and using techniques not permitted within appellation rules. This flexibility is central to the Bianco Secco Ca' del Merlo's grape composition, which brings together indigenous and international varieties grown side by side on the same hillside.
