Tasting notes

This is a Corsican-style dry rosé from California: the direct-press co-fermentation of Sangiovese and Syrah yields sour cherry, dried strawberry, and a faint garrigue note without any sweetness or flabbiness. The stainless steel élevage keeps it taut and food-friendly, making it genuinely versatile at the table.

Discovino is a sub-label of Wonderwerk Co., a California natural wine project founded by Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy. The Donna Rosé was their first commercial release, born after the pair attended Despacio, a traveling high-end discotheque organized by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. The wine is produced at the Atelier des Savants Fous custom crush facility in Gilroy.

Fruit for this 2018 comes from the El Pomar District of Paso Robles, a 21,300-acre sub-AVA situated centrally within the broader appellation. El Pomar sits in a Region II-III climate corridor, moderated by marine air that funnels inland through the Templeton Gap from Estero Bay approximately 15 nautical miles away. Soils are dominated by the Linne-Calodo complex: moderately alkaline clay loams and sandy loams with calcareous shale fragments that limit vine vigor and support natural acidity.

The blend is 45% Sangiovese and 55% Syrah, harvested at 21.0 degrees Brix. Grapes were direct-pressed and the juice co-fermented in stainless steel using a combination of native and selected microflora to build aromatic complexity. No oak aging is noted; the wine was kept in stainless to preserve freshness and lift.

The result sits squarely in a Corsican rosé register: dry, relatively pale, and structured more around savory red-fruit tension than sweetness or weight. The Syrah brings dried herb and dark berry character while the Sangiovese contributes sour cherry brightness and firm acidity.

Pour this alongside grilled branzino or sea bass, where its acidity and dry red-fruit character act as a counterpoint to rich fish oils. It works equally well with charcuterie, tomato-based pasta, or a simple Niçoise salad. The Sangiovese backbone gives it enough structure to handle herb-roasted chicken or pork tenderloin.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Discovino

Discovino is a label created by Wonderwerk Co., a California natural wine operation founded by childhood friends Issamu Kamide and Andrew Lardy, who met in high school in Virginia before separately making their way to California. Andrew enrolled in the Fresno State Enology program after leaving a graduate degree in neuropsychology, then worked in multiple Central Coast wineries. Issamu relocated to Los Angeles after studying brand management and later earned his WSET Level 3 certification.

Wonderwerk produces wine at the Atelier des Savants Fous custom crush facility in Gilroy, a shared production space housing nine wineries with temperature-controlled cellars. The company sources grapes from responsibly farmed vineyards across California, selecting fruit based on site character rather than a fixed appellation focus. Discovino Donna Rosé was their first commercial release, conceived after attending Despacio, a roving high-end discotheque created by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and the Soulwax brothers.

Wonderwerk specializes in low-intervention winemaking including direct pressing, co-fermentation, and the use of both native and selected microflora. For Donna Rosé, grapes were pressed directly to stainless steel tank where the Sangiovese and Syrah co-fermented together without oak contact. The approach prioritizes aromatic lift and textural tension over extraction or richness.

Wine region

Paso Robles, USA

Paso Robles AVA, established in 1983, covers approximately 614,000 acres in northern San Luis Obispo County with over 40,000 acres under vine. In 2014, the TTB approved 11 nested sub-AVAs to formalize the region's dramatic east-west climate and soil contrasts. East of Highway 101, including El Pomar, conditions are warmer and drier relative to the coastal-facing westside, with alluvial and calcareous soils at elevations of 700 to 1,600 feet.

The El Pomar District spans approximately 21,300 acres at the center of the Paso Robles AVA. Its defining feature is the Templeton Gap effect: marine air builds over Estero Bay and spills inland through a pass in the Santa Lucia Range, pushing daily sea breezes of 10 to 20 miles per hour through the vineyards and dropping afternoon temperatures substantially. Soils are primarily the Linne-Calodo complex of alkaline clay loams and shaly loams with calcareous fragments, providing good drainage and moderate stress that supports flavor concentration. The district is rated Region II to Region III on the Winkler scale and receives roughly 15 inches of annual rainfall. Rhône varieties including Syrah and Grenache, as well as Italian varieties such as Sangiovese, perform well here.
