Tasting notes

Pineau d'Aunis in a direct-press pet nat is rare — you get the variety's signature white pepper and wild strawberry without any tannin getting in the way. At 11% ABV with gentle bubbles, this is the kind of bottle that disappears fast on a warm afternoon.

Ich I Go Pet Nat Rosé is a pétillant naturel from Ludovic Chanson, made by direct press of 80% Pineau d'Aunis and 20% Gamay. The name is a nod to the Japanese word for strawberry — ichigo — which gives a clear signal of the wine's aromatic direction. The 2016 vintage was made from purchased grapes, as Chanson's estate in Montlouis-sur-Loire is planted primarily to Chenin Blanc, with only small red variety plots.

The wine follows the méthode ancestrale: fermentation begins in tank and finishes in bottle on residual sugar, without any addition of sugar or yeast to trigger secondary fermentation. The result is a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol rosé with fine, soft bubbles. No dosage is added, and the wine is bottled with minimal intervention, consistent with Chanson's non-interventionist approach across his lineup.

Pineau d'Aunis is one of the oldest red varieties in the Loire Valley, known for pale color, bright acidity, light tannins, and a signature white pepper note layered over red fruit. Gamay adds a bit more body and color. Together in a direct-press format, both grapes express fresh strawberry and raspberry, a subtle peppery finish, and the lively acidity typical of the Touraine climate.

Chanson farms his estate near the village of Husseau outside Montlouis organically, certified by ECOCERT. The estate soils are clay-heavy with a limestone base and scattered silex and flint. Average vine age is 40 years. His first solo vintage was 2009, after leaving pharmaceutical research to stage with Vincent Carême in Vouvray and Damien Delecheneau at Domaine La Grange Tiphaine in Amboise.

Serve lightly chilled with charcuterie — cured ham, pâté, or dry sausage are natural partners for Pineau d'Aunis. The bright acidity and low tannin also make it a good match for fresh goat cheese or a soft-ripened brie. Works equally well as an aperitif on its own.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Ludovic Chanson

Ludovic Chanson trained as a biochemist and worked in pharmaceutical research before leaving in 2007. He spent time with Vouvray producer Vincent Carême and later with Damien Delecheneau at Domaine La Grange Tiphaine in Amboise, and also trained in pruning technique with Nicolas Renard. In 2008, he took over a property previously owned by retiring winemaker Alex Mathur near the village of Husseau, a few minutes outside Montlouis-sur-Loire. His first solo vintage was 2009.

The estate covers 6.2 hectares, with 5 hectares planted to Chenin Blanc and the remainder to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Soils are clay-heavy with a deep limestone base and many parcels scattered with silex and flint. Average vine age is approximately 40 years. The property was already farmed organically before Chanson took over in 2008, and he has since obtained organic certification through ECOCERT.

Chanson's winemaking approach is non-interventionist. Across his range, he uses direct pressing, native yeast fermentation, and minimal sulfur additions. His still Chenin Blancs are aged in 400-liter barrels and bottled without fining or heavy filtration. For his pétillant naturel wines, he relies on the méthode ancestrale — partial fermentation in tank completed in bottle using only residual sugar, with no added sugar or cultured yeast. Total production of the Ich I Go pet nat is typically between 2,500 and 3,000 bottles per vintage.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Montlouis-sur-Loire sits on the left bank of the Loire River, directly opposite Vouvray, just east of Tours. The appellation covers three communes: Montlouis-sur-Loire, Lussault-sur-Loire, and Saint-Martin-le-Beau. Vineyards sit at elevations between 50 and 100 meters on a plateau bordered to the north by the Loire and to the south by the Cher. The climate is temperate oceanic, with the Loire acting as a thermal buffer — moderating summer heat and softening winter cold. Rainfall averages around 26 inches per year.

The soils of Montlouis are a mix of perruches — a local term for lithified clay and flint — along with sand and clay, all sitting over a deep tuffeau limestone bedrock. This is the same soft calcareous stone found in Vouvray and Saumur, and it plays an important role in regulating water retention for the vines. Montlouis soils tend to be sandier than those of Vouvray, which have more clay in the topsoil and closer contact with the limestone beneath. The appellation was formally delimited in 1938 and produces dry, demi-sec, sweet, and sparkling wines exclusively from Chenin Blanc. Red and rosé wines from growers in the area are typically labeled as Touraine AOC or Vin de France.
