Tasting notes

Swick's Pinot Noir delivers the classic Oregon combination of dark cherry and forest floor without any of the oak weight or extracted fruit that can flatten the variety. The whole-cluster semi-carbonic approach keeps the wine crunchy and alive, with an edge of mushroom and earth that gives it real savory depth.

This Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is sourced from two organically farmed sites: Cancilla Vineyard in the northwest Willamette Valley, planted on alluvial and basalt soils, and Greyhorse Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, planted on Yamhill siltstone. Both vineyards are 100% Pommard clone. The wine is produced by Joe Swick, a 5th-generation Oregonian who started his label in 2013 after a decade of working harvests across Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, and Tasmania.

Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented as whole clusters using semi-carbonic maceration in 500-liter barrels with indigenous yeast. Pigeage runs once to twice daily for approximately 30 days of skin contact. The wine is then pressed into 500-liter, 5-year-old neutral French oak barrels for around 10 months of aging before bottling unfined and unfiltered, with a minimal addition of sulfur.

On the nose, expect black cherry, damp earth, and mushroom with a lift of raspberry. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, and fruit-forward with bright, grippy acidity and soft tannins. This is a wine built for drinking now but with the structure to hold a few years in bottle.

No additives are used in the cellar. Swick sources exclusively from organic and biodynamic growers, keeping alcohol moderate and acidity central to the style.

The bright acidity and earthy character make this a natural alongside roast chicken with mushrooms, duck breast with cherry reduction, or a plate of charcuterie. It also holds its own against salmon, particularly when prepared with earthy accompaniments like lentils or root vegetables.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Swick Wines

Joe Swick is a 5th-generation Oregonian, born and raised in Portland. He entered the wine industry in 2001 working in the wine department of a specialty organic food store. His first harvest came in 2003, and over the following decade he completed 15 harvests across Oregon, Washington, the Russian River in Sonoma, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, and Tasmania. He returned to Oregon in 2013 to start Swick Wines in the Willamette Valley.

Swick sources grapes exclusively from organic, biodynamic, or sustainably farmed vineyards in Oregon and Washington, focusing on cooler-climate sites that produce wines with lower alcohol and higher natural acidity. Key Oregon sources include Cancilla Vineyard in the northwest Willamette Valley and Greyhorse Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, both practicing or certified organic. He does not own vineyards and works as a negociant, selecting fruit from a rotating cast of growers.

In the cellar, Swick uses spontaneous fermentation only, with no commercial yeasts, no acid corrections, and no temperature control on fermenting wines. Whole clusters are standard for his red wines, worked by foot once to twice daily. He ages in neutral oak and bottles without fining or filtration. A small addition of sulfur is made at bottling on select wines when he deems it necessary to protect the wine; many releases are zero-sulfur.

Wine region

Willamette Valley, USA

The Willamette Valley stretches roughly 150 miles through northwestern Oregon, running between the Coast Range to the west and the Cascade Mountains to the east. This protected basin produces a long, temperate growing season with warm but rarely hot summers, quick evening cooling, and significant diurnal temperature swings. The valley sits at a similar latitude to Burgundy, and its cool-climate conditions favor varieties that need a slow ripening arc.

The Willamette Valley AVA, established in 1983, contains 11 nested sub-appellations. Key sub-AVAs include Dundee Hills, known for red Jory volcanic soils; Yamhill-Carlton, with ancient marine sedimentary soils and coarse-grained lava intrusions; Chehalem Mountains, which features a mix of basalt, loess, and marine sediments; and Eola-Amity Hills, cooled by marine winds through the Van Duzer Corridor. Pinot Noir accounts for the majority of plantings across all sub-appellations, with Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc also widely grown.
