Tasting notes

At 11% ABV, this is Syrah stripped of heaviness: tart red fruit, a meaty and earthy nose, and supple tannins driven by the granitic soils of the Sierra Foothills. The semi-carbonic winemaking and partial whole-cluster pressing keep it kinetic and food-friendly in a way that high-alcohol California Syrah rarely is.

Syrah sourced from the organically farmed Oakstone vineyard in Calaveras County, within the Sierra Foothills AVA. The 2017 growing season was marked by a prolonged heat spike that caused the vines to shut down early before harvest, resulting in elevated acidity and unusually low alcohol at 11%. Grapes were hand-picked in the early morning of September 23.

After harvest, clusters were sorted and foot-trodden until roughly one-third of the grapes were crushed. The macerating fruit was blanketed with carbon dioxide and allowed to cold-soak. Fermentation with native yeasts began three days after harvest. The cap was submerged twice daily until pressing on October 2, at which point one-third of the clusters remained intact whole. Total maceration lasted around nine days.

Malo-lactic conversion began as fermentation concluded and finished within ten weeks. The wine was aged in neutral barrel and bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. Granitic soils at elevation in the Sierra Foothills give the wine its lifted, bright character despite the warmth of the appellation.

Works well with roasted chicken thighs, grilled lamb merguez, or a charcuterie spread of cured pork. The high acidity and light body also make it a practical match for dishes with tomato-based sauces or fresh herbs. Serve slightly cool, around 58-62F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Purity Wine

Purity Wine is the project of Noel Diaz, operating out of Richmond, California. Diaz spent nearly two decades in the restaurant industry before earning his WSET Level 3 certification and passing the Court of Master Sommeliers Level 1 exam in 2011. He began making wine in 2013, initially sourcing fruit from various California counties. Since 2016, all fruit sourced by Purity Wine has been organically grown.

In 2017, Diaz entered into a lease to farm a vineyard in Calaveras County, which became the Oakstone site. He has since expanded to leased vineyards in Mendocino and Contra Costa Counties as well. His stated mission is minimal intervention: sourcing from organically farmed vineyards and staying out of the way of what the vintage and place express.

Purity Wine's winemaking approach centers on foot-treading, native yeast fermentation, CO2 blanketing for semi-carbonic maceration, and whole or partial whole-cluster fermentation. Wines are aged in neutral barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. Noel publishes the full winemaking story on each bottle's back label.

Wine region

Calaveras County, USA

Calaveras County sits within the Sierra Foothills AVA, east of the San Joaquin Valley at the base of the Sierra Nevada range. Vineyard elevations in the county run from roughly 800 to 3,300 feet, delivering significant diurnal temperature swings: warm days during the growing season followed by cool alpine air off the mountains at night. That shift preserves natural acidity even as grapes ripen fully.

Soils in the Sierra Foothills range from decomposed granite and sandy loam to volcanic rock and schist. Low fertility forces deep root development and limits yields, concentrating flavor in smaller berries. The Sierra Foothills AVA, established in 1987 and spanning eight counties including Calaveras, is well suited to Rhone varieties such as Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, as well as Zinfandel, Barbera, and Tempranillo. Calaveras County wines are labeled under the broader Sierra Foothills AVA, as the county does not have its own nested sub-AVA.
