Product description

Field Recordings Skins Orange 2024 is a skin-contact white wine from California's Central Coast, blending approximately twelve grape varieties led by Chenin Blanc alongside Pinot Gris, Malvasia Bianca, Vermentino, Albariño, and others sourced from organic and sustainable vineyards across Paso Robles. Winemaker Andrew Jones destems the grapes and ferments them on skins with native yeasts, creating texture and depth while maintaining freshness. Field Recordings Skins Orange 2024 represents the winery's "gateway orange wine" philosophy—approachable and versatile without being esoteric. Bottled with minimal sulfites. 12% ABV.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Field Recordings

Field Recordings began in 2007 as winemaker Andrew Jones' side project while working as a grapevine nurseryman across California's Central Coast. His day job—planning and planting vineyards for growers throughout the region—gave him access to sites most winemakers never see. Farmers occasionally offered small lots of their best fruit, and Jones recognized diamonds in the rough: unknown or underappreciated vineyards with untapped potential.

Jones studied agricultural business with a viticulture minor at Cal Poly on a football scholarship, interning at Gallo on the Sonoma Coast before returning to nursery work. He first made wine during college, and the skills complemented each other—understanding vine physiology improved his winemaking, while crafting wine deepened his appreciation for vineyard management.

What began as small batches of Chenin Blanc from a 1970s-era vineyard has expanded into a substantial operation. Field Recordings now sources from over 28 ranches across the Central Coast, from Arroyo Seco to Happy Canyon, with a 12-person team. The winery operates from Tin City in Paso Robles, the neighborhood that has become California's natural wine hub.

Jones positions Skins as "the gateway orange wine"—designed for the drinking experience rather than the tasting experience, something entire groups can enjoy without specialized knowledge. His winemaking philosophy emphasizes native yeast fermentation and minimal additives, with only moderate sulfur additions post-fermentation. He filters wines for retail stability, which allows lower overall sulfur use.

Field Recordings has become one of California's largest pét-nat producers while maintaining the ethos of discovering overlooked vineyards and varieties. Jones recently acquired Le Bon Climat in Santa Barbara County, expanding the estate's reach. The winery's range spans single-vineyard bottlings to accessible blends under the Fiction and Wonderwall labels.

Wine region

California, United States

California's Central Coast stretches from San Francisco Bay to Santa Barbara County, encompassing one of America's most diverse wine-growing territories. This vast region includes numerous distinct AVAs (American Viticultural Areas), each with unique climate patterns, soil compositions, and grape variety affinities. The Pacific Ocean's influence defines Central Coast viticulture—marine fog and cool breezes moderate temperatures, extending the growing season and preserving natural acidity in the grapes.

Paso Robles, located in San Luis Obispo County, serves as Field Recordings' home base. This AVA covers over 600,000 acres with elevations ranging from 700 to 2,400 feet. The region experiences significant diurnal temperature variation—warm days and cool nights create conditions favorable for both bold reds and aromatic whites. Soils vary from limestone and calcareous shale to sandy loam and clay, supporting diverse grape varieties.

The broader Central Coast encompasses additional notable sub-regions. The SLO Coast AVA, established in 2022, represents extreme coastal growing conditions where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive. Santa Barbara County's Happy Canyon and Santa Ynez Valley contribute warm-climate varieties, while Monterey's Arroyo Seco provides cooler conditions suited to aromatic whites.

What distinguishes Central Coast winemaking today is the diversity of grape varieties cultivated beyond the expected Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Forward-thinking producers have planted Mediterranean varieties like Albariño, Vermentino, and Grenache alongside rare grapes such as Trousseau Gris and Colombard. This experimentation has fostered a thriving natural wine scene, with Paso Robles' Tin City neighborhood becoming a hub for minimal-intervention producers.

The region's agricultural heritage—cattle ranching, grain farming, and orchards preceded widespread viticulture—supports a culture of sustainable farming practices increasingly embraced by progressive wineries.
