Tasting notes

Vermentino is rarely grown in the Pacific Northwest, and Holden's take from the Columbia Gorge brings citrus pith, white peach, and crushed-rock minerality in a dry, lively frame. The grape's signature bitter-almond finish gives it a savory edge that makes it more interesting at the table than most crowd-pleasing whites.

Holden Wine Company is a Portland-area project founded by Sterling Whitted, a former Whole Foods wine buyer who studied enology at Oregon State University and worked harvests at Owen Roe, Cameron, and Teutonic Wine Company. The winery focuses on Italian grape varieties grown in Oregon, working with minimal inputs and no added chemicals.

This 2016 Vermentino is made from 100% Vermentino grapes sourced from the Columbia River Gorge AVA. The Gorge is the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Range, and its persistent winds — averaging 10 to 20 mph — act as a natural cooling and drying force on the vineyards. Soils in the AVA are primarily silty loams formed from Missoula Flood deposits, volcanic activity, and landslides, with vineyard elevations ranging from 95 to nearly 1,800 feet.

Vermentino is a thin-skinned, late-ripening white grape with naturally high acidity and a characteristic phenolic bitterness on the finish often described as green almond. In the glass it is dry and light-to-medium bodied, with citrus fruit, white peach, and a mineral, slightly saline quality on the palate. At 13.2% ABV, this bottling sits on the riper end for the variety, suggesting good hang time in the Gorge's warm days and cool nights.

The Columbia Gorge AVA was established in 2004 and spans both sides of the Columbia River across Oregon and Washington. Its transitional climate supports an unusually wide range of grape varieties, from cool-climate aromatics on the wetter western end to bold reds near the drier eastern boundary around Lyle, Washington.

Vermentino's high acidity and saline minerality make it a natural match for grilled fish, shellfish, and herb-forward dishes. Try it alongside seared halibut with a lemon-caper sauce, grilled shrimp with garlic, or a light pasta with clams and parsley. It also works well with pesto-dressed dishes and mild fresh cheeses.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Holden Wine Company

Holden Wine Company was founded in 2011 by Sterling Whitted, a former wine buyer at Whole Foods who pursued an advanced enology degree at Oregon State University. Before launching his own label, Whitted worked at Owen Roe, Cameron, and Teutonic Wine Company. He initially made wine at Apolloni and later at Cooper's Hall in Portland, sharing space in exchange for harvest labor.

The winery is focused primarily on northern Italian grape varieties grown in Oregon, an unusual niche in the Pacific Northwest. Whitted's stated philosophy centers on minimal inputs, avoiding chemicals and additives, and allowing the grapes to express their variety and site with as little intervention as possible. The approach aligns with natural winemaking practices, though no specific third-party certification has been confirmed.

Wine region

Columbia River Gorge, USA

The Columbia River Gorge AVA, established in 2004, straddles the Oregon-Washington border along a 40-mile corridor of the Columbia River roughly 60 miles east of Portland. It is the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Mountain Range, and persistent winds averaging 10 to 20 mph funnel through it continuously, cooling and drying the vineyards. Vineyard elevations range from 95 to nearly 1,800 feet, and the climate shifts dramatically from west to east — from a marine-influenced 36 inches of annual rainfall near the Cascades to a continental high desert with just 10 inches near the eastern boundary.

Soils across the AVA are primarily silty loams shaped by the Missoula Floods of 15,000 years ago, volcanic deposits, and landslides, with 30 distinct soil series represented among vineyard sites. This climatic and soil diversity allows the Gorge to grow an unusually wide range of varieties — from cool-climate aromatics and Pinot Noir on the cooler Oregon side to Zinfandel and bold reds near Lyle on the eastern end. Wines from the region tend to be riper than those from western Oregon AVAs, while retaining higher acidity and structure than wines from the warmer eastern Washington appellations.
