Australian Wine

Australian natural wine has undergone a quiet revolution. The generation working the Clare and Eden Valleys, the Barossa, McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills, and smaller regions like the Riverland and the Pyrenees has largely set aside the big, oaky, high-alcohol style that once defined Australian wine abroad, replacing it with something more interesting: light-footed reds, textured skin-contact whites, vibrant pet-nats, and genuinely food-friendly bottles from old-vine Grenache, Shiraz, Riesling, Fiano, and Nero d'Avola.

Read more about Australian natural wine

The heart of the new Australian wine is old vines and cooler sites. The Barossa and Clare Valleys hold some of the oldest continuously farmed Grenache, Shiraz, and Riesling vineyards on earth, and a wave of growers now picks earlier, uses whole bunches, and ferments with native yeast to make lighter, fresher versions of these classics. In the cooler Adelaide Hills and Gippsland, the air suits Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and sparkling, while McLaren Vale has become a hotbed for skin-contact whites and Mediterranean grapes like Fiano, Vermentino, and Nero d'Avola.

The overall style has shifted from power to drinkability. Expect crunchy, chillable reds, textured amber wines, and lively pet-nats alongside the more serious, age-worthy bottles the country has always made well. Many of these producers farm organically or biodynamically and keep cellar additions low, which lets Australia's sunshine read as freshness rather than weight.

For a first taste, try a chillable Grenache or a dry Clare Valley Riesling. For something further out, reach for a skin-contact white or a field-blend red. Explore more warm-climate, low-intervention wine in our orange and red wine collections.

Not anymore. A whole generation of growers has moved away from the oaky, high-alcohol style that made Australia famous in the 1990s, toward lighter, fresher, more food-friendly wine. This collection focuses on that new wave: chillable reds, textured skin-contact whites, and lively pet-nats alongside the country's more serious bottles.

Expect wines from the Barossa and Clare Valleys, McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills, and cooler pockets like Gippsland, made from old-vine Grenache, Shiraz, and Riesling as well as Mediterranean grapes like Fiano, Vermentino, and Nero d'Avola.

Many of the producers we carry farm organically or biodynamically and keep cellar additions low, though not every small grower holds formal certification. Australia's warm, dry climate makes low-input farming relatively straightforward in many regions.

Australia has some of the oldest Grenache vines in the world. Handled in a fresh, low-intervention way, they give perfumed, red-fruited, medium-bodied wines with a savory, spicy lift, a world away from the jammy style the grape is sometimes known for.

Chillable reds and skin-contact whites suit barbecue, grilled vegetables, and spiced food especially well. Dry Riesling is excellent with seafood and Asian dishes, while the fuller reds handle roast and grilled meats.
