Tasting notes

The carbonic-fermented Valdiguie and whole-cluster Carignan work in opposite directions and meet in the middle: one bringing a lifted, juicy brightness, the other delivering blue fruit and earthy grip. At 12.5% ABV, the wine stays nimble and food-friendly without sacrificing structure.

Broc Cellars Love Red 2017 is a field-blend-style red sourced from two vineyards in Solano County's Green Valley: Parenti Vineyard, which supplies the Carignan, and Wirth Ranch, which provides the Valdiguie, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are approximately 70 years old, dry-farmed, head-pruned, and grown in clay loam soils. The fruit was harvested in the second week of September to lock in natural acidity at 12.5% ABV.

The Carignan and Syrah were whole-cluster fermented and then destemmed in concrete and stainless tanks. The Valdiguie went through carbonic fermentation in stainless steel, a technique that extracts bright fruit and preserves freshness. The finished wine aged for 8 months in a combination of concrete tanks and neutral French oak barrels. No commercial yeasts, enzymes, or additives were used at any stage.

The blend breaks down as 50% Carignan, 36% Valdiguie, 8% Syrah, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Carignan anchors the blend with blue and dark fruit; Valdiguie lifts the acidity and adds brightness; Syrah adds structure and depth. The result is a light-to-medium-bodied red with a fruity, floral nose, a fresh palate, and a subtly spicy, peppery finish.

Works well with charcuterie, roasted chicken thighs, or a tomato-based pasta where the acidity mirrors the wine. The peppery finish makes it a natural match for grilled lamb chops or merguez. Serve slightly cool, around 58-62F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Broc Cellars

Broc Cellars was founded in 2002 by Chris Brockway, who grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, studied oenology at Fresno State, and made his first commercial vintage from a single barrel. The winery is based in Berkeley's Gilman District, operating out of two warehouse spaces: one for fermentation in stainless steel, concrete, and wood tanks, and a separate barrel and concrete egg room. Broc had its first official release in 2006 and now produces more than 20 different wines annually.

Brockway sources fruit from organically farmed vineyards across California, focusing on older vines, lesser-known varieties, and sites that most producers pass over. He works with growers whose farming practices align with his own: organic or biodynamic where possible, dry-farming over irrigation when the site allows. In 2021 he took over farming operations at Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino, and purchased the 60-acre site outright in 2023. Fox Hill received CCOF certified organic status in 2024.

All Broc Cellars wines are made with spontaneous native yeast fermentation. No commercial yeasts, bacteria, enzymes, tannins, or other fermentation agents are added. Sulfur use is minimal: Brockway adds a small amount only when necessary, typically a few weeks before bottling to allow it to integrate. Fermentation and aging vessels include stainless steel tanks, concrete tanks, and neutral French oak barrels, chosen based on the variety and desired outcome for each wine.

Wine region

Solano County, USA

Solano County Green Valley is an AVA established in 1982, located about 12 miles northeast of San Pablo Bay and 8 miles from Napa township. It sits in a small north-south valley between the Vaca Mountains to the east and the Mount George Range to the west. The proximity to San Pablo Bay brings cooling fog into the valley each evening, slowing ripening and preserving acidity in the grapes. Daytime warmth gives way to cold overnight temperatures, extending the growing season in a way similar to neighboring Napa and Sonoma valleys.

The soils in Green Valley are predominantly alluvial, deep, and free-draining, with significant clay loam fractions across the valley floor. These low-fertility soils stress the vines and drive smaller berry yields with concentrated flavor. The AVA covers approximately 800 acres of planted vineyards, and historically supported varieties including Carignan (known locally as Carignane), Gamay (now identified as Valdiguie), Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel. Wirth Ranch and Parenti Vineyard, both within the AVA, are among the sites with vines dating back around 70 years.
