Tasting notes

Kick On Ranch is one of the windiest and coldest sites in Santa Barbara County, and that austerity comes through clearly in the glass — bracing acidity, saline minerality, and a petrol-tinged nose that signals real Riesling character. At 12.2% ABV, it stays lively and food-ready without any heaviness.

The Augur Riesling comes from Kick On Ranch Vineyard, located west of Los Alamos near Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County. The vineyard sits in a narrow east-west corridor that funnels Pacific wind inland, resulting in near-constant breeze and persistent marine fog. Soils are Arnold sand and Betteravia sandy loam over ancient beach deposits, diatomaceous earth, and chert — nutrient-poor ground that stresses the vines and concentrates flavor. The Riesling is among the last fruit to ripen at the site, typically harvested in October.

J. Brix has sourced Riesling from Kick On Ranch since 2010, introduced to the site through the work of winemaker Adam Tolmach of The Ojai Vineyard. The wine is fermented with native yeasts in neutral vessels, with no fining and no filtration. The name Augur references a Roman official who interpreted bird flight patterns as omens — a nod to the fact that when J. Brix first visited the vineyard, the ripening grapes were left without bird netting because the fruit still had so much acidity the birds would not eat it.

At 12.2% ABV, the 2017 Augur sits in off-dry to dry territory with firm acidity. Expect notes of honey, white florals, orange oil, and a petrol-like mineral lift typical of cool-climate Riesling. The finish carries lemon, roasted almond, and saline minerality drawn from the sandy, marine-sediment soils of Kick On Ranch.

The high acidity and saline mineral quality make this a strong match for raw oysters, steamed clams, or sushi. It also works well alongside spicy Thai or Vietnamese dishes, where the slight residual sweetness tempers heat. Hard, aged cheeses like aged Gouda or Gruyere hold up to its structure.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

J. Brix Wines

J. Brix Wines was founded by Jody Brix Towe and Emily Towe, San Diego-area residents who got their start as volunteer harvest interns in Santa Barbara County after a bottle of Pinot Noir from the Santa Maria Valley prompted a visit to the region. They made their first wines in their garage in 2009 and established a commercial winery shortly after. The operation grew into a production facility in Escondido and, in 2024, opened its first tasting room in San Marcos, California.

J. Brix sources fruit from vineyards in Santa Barbara County and San Diego County, with Kick On Ranch in Los Alamos as a foundational site for their white wines. Jody's background in horticulture informs close attention to vineyard conditions and vine physiology across each growing season. The vineyards they work with are farmed without synthetic inputs; some are certified organic and others farm organically without certification.

All J. Brix wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts in neutral vessels. The wines are not cold stabilized, fined, or filtered. Winemaking decisions vary vintage to vintage based on the conditions of each growing season rather than a fixed formula. Their Riesling pet-nat from Kick On Ranch earned the top spot in a 2018 New York Times tasting panel led by Eric Asimov.

Wine region

Santa Barbara County, USA

Santa Barbara County sits at the southern end of California's Central Coast AVA, roughly 100 miles north of Los Angeles. Its defining geographic feature is a pair of transverse mountain ranges — the San Rafael Range and the Santa Ynez Mountains — that run east to west rather than north to south. This orientation pulls cold, fog-laden Pacific air directly inland through the valleys, creating one of California's coolest grape-growing climates despite the low latitude of 34.5 degrees north. Average peak growing-season temperatures run between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with nighttime lows dropping below 50 degrees, allowing for slow ripening and naturally high acidity in the fruit.

Santa Barbara County holds seven federally recognized AVAs: Santa Maria Valley, Santa Ynez Valley, Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, and Alisos Canyon. Kick On Ranch Vineyard, the source for The Augur, lies in the Los Alamos Valley — a sub-region between Santa Maria and Buellton that does not yet hold its own AVA status and is labeled under the broader Santa Barbara County designation. Los Alamos runs approximately 10 degrees cooler on average than the Santa Ynez Valley to its south and is well suited to cool-climate varieties including Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Soils across the county range from sandy loam and diatomaceous earth near the coast to clay loam and gravel further inland.
