Tasting notes

This Chardonnay drinks like a leaner, more mineral-driven white Burgundy — white peach and citrus zest on the nose, chalky texture, and a saline finish that lingers. The Herrenstück elevation and volcanic-loess soils pull focus away from fruit and toward structure in a way that's rare at this price point from Germany.

Holger Koch's Chardonnay Herrenstück comes from the terraced Herrenstück vineyards above the Kaiserstuhl flatlands, at around 300 meters elevation. The soils here are a mix of loess and volcanic rock — thinner topsoil and more concentrated volcanic substrate than the lower Kaiserstuhl parcels, with stronger winds and greater diurnal temperature swings. The Chardonnay vines are grafted from selection massale cuttings sourced in Puligny-Montrachet, planted on the cooler hillside terraces of Bickensohl.

In the cellar, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in 500–600L barrels, with a small skin-contact portion (roughly 5–10%) blended in before bottling. The wine ages sur lie with periodic battonage and sees no fining. The result is dry, mineral, and structured rather than fruit-forward or creamy — more aligned with a village-level white Burgundy than anything typically associated with German Chardonnay.

Holger Koch took over his family's estate in Vogtsburg am Kaiserstuhl in 1999. The property covers approximately 7.5 hectares, farmed organically (certified through 2014, practicing organic since). Vines are low-yielding, small-berried clones from Alsace and Burgundy. The winery sits close enough to Alsace that the French border is visible across the Rhine on a clear day.

The 2019 vintage delivered good ripeness across Baden without the heat extremes of some recent years, producing wines with concentration and freshness in balance — a favorable growing season for this style of Chardonnay.

Works well with roast chicken, turbot, or any white fish in a butter or cream sauce. The wine's salinity and acidity make it a natural match for fresh goat cheese or a simple leek gratin. Avoid heavy oak-driven dishes — this wine is about precision, not power.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Holger Koch

Holger Koch and his wife Gabriele Engesser took over the family property in Vogtsburg am Kaiserstuhl in 1999, after Holger worked as cellar master at Fritz Keller. The estate covers approximately 7.5 hectares. Upon taking over, Koch replanted the vineyards with small-berried, low-yielding clones sourced from Alsace and Burgundy — specifically selection massale cuttings from Puligny-Montrachet for Chardonnay.

Farming is organic, certified through 2014 and continuing under organic principles. Vineyards are on the cooler, higher-elevation terraces around Bickensohl, where the combination of volcanic and loess soils, wind exposure, and significant day-night temperature differences define the house style. The estate hierarchy mirrors Burgundy: Kaiserstuhl-level wines from lower elevations and loess soils, Herrenstück-level wines from the terraced mid-elevations, and single-star, three-star, and Reserve selections from the most extreme, high-elevation parcels.

In the cellar, grapes are destemmed but not crushed, then given a short maceration before overnight pressing. Must is cold-settled for roughly 12 hours before fermentation begins naturally in 400–600L barrels. Malolactic fermentation typically completes over winter. The wine ages sur lie with battonage and a small skin-contact portion (5–10%) is blended in before bottling. No fining; light filtration at most. Sulfur additions are minimal.

Wine region

Baden, Germany

The Kaiserstuhl is a compact volcanic hill range rising from the Upper Rhine Plain in southwestern Baden, Germany. It sits directly across the Rhine from Alsace, less than 30 kilometers to the west, and benefits from the rain shadow cast by the Vosges Mountains — low rainfall, high sunshine, and a near-Mediterranean microclimate unique at 48 degrees north latitude. It is consistently Germany's warmest wine-growing district.

The soils combine Ice Age loess on top with volcanic basalt and tuff beneath — a dual-texture profile where the upper terraces expose more volcanic substrate as the loess layer thins with elevation. All three Pinot varieties (Noir, Gris, Blanc) dominate plantings, and Chardonnay has grown in importance. The Großlage is called Vulkanfelsen. Koch's vineyards are concentrated around Bickensohl, on the cooler, higher-elevation hillside terraces where wind exposure and diurnal temperature swings preserve acidity.
