Marto

Marto Cote de Flon Rheinischer Landwein 2023

Regular price $30.00
  • Style: Medium to full-bodied dry white with structured acidity, a saline mineral thread from the sandstone soils, and texture from barrel aging; notably different in register from the aromatic Marto Weiss; built to develop in bottle
  • Grapes & Terroir: Riesling, Silvaner, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and direct-press Pinot Noir; organically farmed in Flonheim on characteristic red sandstone soils of the western Rheinhessen; whole-bunch direct press across all varieties
  • Winemaking: All grapes whole-bunch direct-pressed; spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts; aged in new and used 500-liter barrels; no maceration; no fining, no filtration, no added sulfites; the wine initially shows some reductive character that opens with air
  • Serving Temperature & Decanting: Serve at 54–57°F; decant or allow 20–30 minutes in the glass before drinking, as the wine benefits noticeably from air exposure
  • Pairing: Spätzle with brown butter and Gruyère
  • Similar To: The combination of Burgundy varieties, barrel aging, and direct-press winemaking places this wine in the same conversation as natural white Burgundy from village-level appellations

Tasting notes

Pale gold with faint green tints. The nose opens with slight reduction that lifts quickly to reveal white pear, galia melon, fennel, lemon zest, and a faint spice from the barrel. On the palate, the acidity is precise and saline, with good concentration and a focused, dry finish.

Food pairings

Spätzle with Gruyère and brown butter, roasted chicken, sole meunière, grilled white asparagus, burrata with olive oil, vitello tonnato, miso-glazed cod, aged Comté, pasta al limone.

Product description

Marto Côte de Flon Rheinischer Landwein 2023 is a dry white wine produced by Marto, the label of Martin Wörner, from organically farmed vineyards in Flonheim, Rheinhessen. Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marto

Marto is the label of Martin Wörner, a winemaker from the village of Flonheim in the western Rheinhessen. The Wörner family's viticultural history in the area spans several generations. Martin's grandfather was among the first growers in Flonheim to bottle wine under his own name, a departure from the cooperative model then dominant in the region. When Martin's father took over, wine production was set aside in favor of organic fruit farming, with the family's grapes sold to other producers. Martin took over the vineyards in 2015 and launched the first Marto vintage in 2017, initially producing around 2,500 bottles.

Before starting Marto, Martin trained at Gut Oggau in Burgenland, Austria, in 2015, and in 2016 at Matassa in the Roussillon with Tom Lubbe. The Matassa stage was particularly formative: harvesting in the south of France before returning to Rheinhessen in the same year gave Martin the experience of two consecutive harvests with new winemaking principles freshly learned. His partner Alanna Lagamba, a Canadian-born winemaker trained partly in France, has worked closely with Martin from the beginning and contributes to both vineyard and cellar work. She makes her own wines under the Vin de la Gamba label.

The Côte de Flon cuvée reflects a deliberate shift in Martin's range toward Burgundy-influenced varieties and barrel-based winemaking, inspired by trips to Alsace and Burgundy in the years after Marto's launch. Martin and Alanna currently cultivate around 10 hectares in and around Flonheim. The full estate is planted to Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Würzer, and Faber. Production across still wines reaches approximately 100,000 bottles per year, alongside around 50,000 bottles of sparkling wine.

On Primal Wine, the Marto range includes Marto Weiss Rheinischer Landwein, Marto Manna Rheinischer Landwein, and Marto Crazy Crazy Pet-Nat. Explore these and more in our best-sellers collection.

Wine region

Rheinhessen, Germany

Rheinhessen is the largest wine-producing region in Germany by vineyard area, covering around 26,500 hectares in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is bounded by the Rhine to the north and east, with the Nahe region forming its western border. The terrain is gently rolling, with a mix of valleys and plateau areas, and the soils vary considerably across the zone. Sandstone is predominant in the western portions of the region, including around the village of Flonheim where the Marto estate is based. Other soil types across Rheinhessen include limestone, loess, and clay, which contribute to the stylistic diversity of wines produced across its 136 villages.

For much of the second half of the twentieth century, Rheinhessen was associated primarily with high-volume, residually sweet wines aimed at export markets, particularly the Liebfraumilch category. The collapse of that market from the late 1980s onwards prompted a long and gradual shift toward dry wine production and a renewed focus on site expression and grape variety character. The region's revival has been particularly visible among a younger generation of producers who arrived in the 2010s, many of them trained at natural wine estates in France and Austria before returning to family vineyards in the Rheinhessen.

The climate in Rheinhessen is one of the driest in Germany, with the Rhine and surrounding hills providing a degree of moderation. This relatively warm and dry continental climate suits a wide range of varieties, from Riesling and Silvaner on hillside exposures to the aromatic crossings, Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Kerner, Bacchus, and Würzer, that were planted extensively during the postwar expansion period and now find new expression in the hands of producers like Marto.
