Regular price $30.00
  • Style: Light-bodied, dry red-white blend with the character of a structured rosé or light red; fresh acidity and a delicate tannic presence; drink young while the fruit is vibrant
  • Grapes & Terroir: Blauer Portugieser and Regent, both direct-pressed; Scheurebe macerated on skins; all from a single vineyard on clay and limestone soils in Flonheim, western Rheinhessen; organically farmed
  • Winemaking: Varieties harvested and handled separately; Portugieser and Regent direct-pressed; Scheurebe skin-macerated for approximately 6 days; partial co-fermentation; aged in old oak barrels for 6–9 months; bottled unfined, unfiltered, no added sulfites
  • Serving Temperature & Decanting: Serve at 52–56°F; a slight chill brings out the wine's acidity and freshness; no decanting needed, though 10 minutes in the glass allows aromatics to open
  • Pairing: Flammkuchen with crème fraîche and lardons
  • Similar To: The blend's light body, floral notes, and red-fruit acidity places it in the same register as a Gamay-based Vin de France or a light Trousseau from the Jura

Product description

Marto Manna Rheinischer Landwein 2023 is a red-white blend produced by Marto, the label of Martin Wörner, based in Flonheim in the Rheinhessen region of Germany. The wine combines Portugieser and Regent, both handled as direct press, with macerated Scheurebe, all sourced from a single vineyard planted on clay and limestone soils. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts, with the components vinified separately before blending. The wine ages in old barrels for several months prior to bottling, with no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites. Marto Manna Rheinischer Landwein 2023 sits in the register between a light red and a rosé, driven by fresh red fruit, floral aromatics, and lively acidity.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marto

Marto is the label of Martin Wörner, a winemaker from the village of Flonheim in the western Rheinhessen. The Wörner family's connection to viticulture in the area goes back several generations. Martin's grandfather was among the first growers in Flonheim to bottle wine under his own name rather than selling to the local cooperative. When Martin's father took over, wine production was set aside and the family concentrated on organic grape growing and strawberry farming, selling fruit to other producers. Martin returned to winemaking in 2016 after completing stages at two of Europe's most closely watched natural wine estates.

In 2015, Martin worked at Gut Oggau in Burgenland, Austria, with Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe, and in 2016 at Matassa in the Roussillon with Tom Lubbe, the New Zealand-born winemaker known for his work with aromatic varieties in southern France. Both experiences shaped Martin's approach to fermentation and his understanding of how to work with the aromatic grape varieties that dominate Flonheim's vineyards. His first Marto vintage was 2017. Vivant Selections notes that from an initial 8 hectares, the estate has grown to 13 hectares over recent years, still planted predominantly to the aromatic crossings his grandfather favored, including Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, and Würzer, alongside Riesling, Silvaner, Portugieser, and newer plantings of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir.

Martin farms organically with biodynamic practices, using cover crops of radishes, beetroot, and turnips, grazing sheep between vine rows, and avoiding tillage. His partner Alanna Lagamba makes wines under her own Vin de la Gamba label and contributes to the work at Marto. Under German appellation law, the village name cannot appear on the label; the rock motif on the Marto bottles is a reference to Flonheim's characteristic sandstone.

On Primal Wine, the Marto range includes Marto Weiss Rheinischer Landwein and Marto Crazy Crazy Pet-Nat. Browse these and more in our best-sellers collection.

Wine region

Rheinhessen, Germany

Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine region by area, covering approximately 26,500 hectares in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is bordered by the Rhine River to the north and east, and transitions into the Nahe wine region to the west. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and broad plateau areas, with the city of Mainz at the northeastern edge and Worms to the southeast. Vineyards are planted across 136 villages, with a wide variety of soil types including loess, sandstone, limestone, clay, and volcanic rock depending on location. The village of Flonheim, where Marto is based, sits in the western part of the region and is known for its distinctive red sandstone, which is reflected in the mineral character found across the estate's wines.

The climate of Rheinhessen is among the driest in Germany, with annual rainfall averaging around 500 millimeters and warm summers moderated by the Rhine. This relative warmth has historically made the region well suited to aromatic grape varieties bred for early ripening, including Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Bacchus, Kerner, and Würzer. It also supports indigenous red varieties like Blauer Portugieser, a thin-skinned grape producing light, fresh reds that were widely planted across the region for much of the twentieth century, and the thick-skinned hybrid Regent, which was developed specifically for organic farming for its resistance to fungal disease.

For most of the postwar period, Rheinhessen was associated with inexpensive semi-sweet wines for export. A generational shift from the 2000s onward has seen a growing number of producers move toward dry wines, organic farming, and low-intervention cellaring, with Marto among the most visible of this new wave.
