Tasting notes

Trollinger rarely gets this treatment: skin contact, méthode ancestrale, zero sulfur, and 45-year-old vines on layered Keuper soils. The combination of pink grapefruit tartness, wild-rose aromatics, and a chalky mineral finish makes this one of the most distinctive pét-nats coming out of Germany. It is effortlessly drinkable at 11.5% ABV without ever feeling thin.

An exclusive collaboration between US importer Super Glou and Weingut Leon Gold, this pét-nat is made from 100% Trollinger grown on 45-year-old vines in the Remstal subregion of Württemberg, southwestern Germany. The estate sits on the old steep slopes of Gundelach, where soils layer gypsum keuper, red sandstone, Bunte marl, and pebble sandstone. Viticulture is certified organic and practicing biodynamic; no synthetic agents are used in the vineyard.

For the 2020 vintage, the Trollinger was direct-pressed into stainless steel and completed fermentation in bottle using the méthode ancestrale, with indigenous yeast driving the whole process. No fining, no filtration, and no sulfur added. The result is a lightly hazy, softly sparkling rosé with 11.5% ABV and 1.5 g/L residual sugar.

The palate opens with pink grapefruit and underripe strawberry, shifts into tart cherry and wild rose, and closes with a pronounced minerality and a chalky, candy-dust finish. The bubbles are gentle and persistent, keeping the wine bright and thirst-driving from start to finish.

Serve with charcuterie, rillettes, or a simple cheese board — the acidity and light effervescence cut through fat without overwhelming delicate flavors. It also works well with lightly spiced fish tacos, ceviche, or anything with citrus and fresh herbs. Good enough to sip on its own as an aperitif straight out of the fridge.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Leon Gold

Leon Gold founded Weingut Leon Gold in 2015 in the Remstal, the side valley of the Rems River east of Stuttgart. He is a first-generation winemaker. After early work stints in the Bottwartal and Remstal, an encounter at a biodynamic winery in the South Palatinate shaped his approach to farming. He trained as a Technician for Viticulture and Oenology at the State Teaching and Research Institute in Weinsberg before returning to the Remstal to establish his own estate on the old steep slopes of Gundelach.

The estate has practiced organic methods from its first vintage. In 2016, Leon converted both the vineyard and cellar to biodynamic practices. He follows biological cycles and moon phases, uses specially prepared compost instead of synthetic agents, and manages the land with a focus on biodiversity. His vines stand on layers of gypsum keuper, red sandstone, Bunte marl, and pebble sandstone — a diverse Keuper soil profile that is reflected in the textural complexity of his wines.

In the cellar, Leon relies on indigenous yeasts for spontaneous fermentation with no additions. The Pink Gold pét-nat is made via méthode ancestrale: the wine is pressed into stainless steel and sealed in bottle before fermentation is complete, allowing natural carbonation to develop. No fining, filtration, or sulfur is added. The Pink Gold is produced as an exclusive collaboration with Super Glou, the US-based natural wine importer and distributor.

Wine region

Württemberg, Germany

Württemberg is Germany's second-largest red wine region, with around 11,500 hectares of vineyards concentrated along the Neckar River and its tributaries, including the Rems, Enz, Kocher, and Jagst. The region sits in the southwest of Germany at roughly 48°N latitude, sheltered by the Black Forest to the west and the Swabian Jura to the east, which moderates temperatures and reduces frost risk. Vineyards in the Remstal subregion sit between 239 and 493 meters above sea level and experience a continental climate with warm, sun-filled summers and cold winters. Average annual sunshine hours reach around 1,600, and annual rainfall is 700 to 800 mm.

Unlike most German wine regions, Württemberg devotes approximately 70% of its planted area to red varieties. Trollinger is the identity grape, covering nearly 2,500 hectares — more than 90% of Germany's total Trollinger plantings are in Württemberg, where it is sometimes called the 'Swabian national drink.' The dominant soils shift across subregions: shell limestone and Keuper in the Neckar Valley; sandstone, gypsum keuper, Bunte marl, and pebble sandstone in the Remstal. The Remstal, extending eastward from Stuttgart, has attracted independent growers focused on quality and minimal intervention, making it one of the more forward-thinking pockets in the region.
