This is dry, stony Riesling with tart lime, gooseberry, and a clean mineral quality that comes from gipskeuper and sandstone soils at 300-400 meters. The indigenous yeast fermentation and stainless steel aging keep it precise and refreshing without any winemaking noise.

La Boutanche Riesling is a dry, 100% Riesling produced by Andi Knauss at Weingut Knauss in Strümpfelbach, in the Remstal area of Württemberg, Germany. The 2020 vintage draws fruit from five separate vineyards planted on gipskeuper and sandstone soils, with vines ranging from 10 to 32 years old. It is hand harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged entirely in stainless steel with minimal sulfur additions.

La Boutanche is a collaboration series conceived by importer Selection Massale to bring honest, affordable natural wine to market in 1-liter screw-top bottles. Knauss, identified on the label by a grasshopper, is the German anchor of the project. The wine is fully dry (trocken) and linear, built around a mineral core with cool citrus fruit and a firm snap of acidity in the finish — closer in spirit to a lean Chablis than to sweeter German Riesling styles.

Weingut Knauss holds organic certification and farms across more than 100 individual plots in and around Strümpfelbach and neighboring villages in the hills above the river Rems. Elevations range between 300 and 400 meters. Natural fermentations and minimal sulfur are standard across the range; some cuvées are bottled with no sulfur at all.

The high acidity and dry mineral finish make this a natural match for grilled trout, oysters, or steamed mussels. It also works well alongside soft fresh cheeses, herb-dressed vegetables, or simple chicken dishes. The liter format makes it an easy pour at the table throughout a meal.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Andi Knauss

Weingut Knauss is a 4th-generation estate in Strümpfelbach, in the Remstal area of Württemberg. For earlier generations, winemaking was secondary to factory work nearby. Andi Knauss trained at wine school and completed a stage in Austria, where he learned organic viticulture, before taking over the estate in 2004. The winery markets its wines independently since 1995, having previously sold fruit to the local cooperative.

The estate covers approximately 14 to 15 hectares spread across more than 100 individual plots in and around Strümpfelbach and neighboring villages including Schnait. Vineyards occupy limestone and keuper hillsides at 300 to 400 meters elevation. The estate is certified organic. Soils include Gipskeuper, Mergel, Schilfsandstein, Kieselsandstein, and Stubensandstein — distinct sedimentary layers that shift with altitude. Vine density is approximately 6,000 vines per hectare with short pruning and intensive canopy management.

Across the range, fermentations use indigenous yeasts and minimal sulfur is the standard; some cuvées receive no sulfur at all. White wines are fermented cold and aged reductively, predominantly in stainless steel. The La Boutanche Riesling is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel. Andi applies gravity flow where possible and avoids pumping. The estate also produces single-vineyard Riesling selections, red wines from Trollinger, Lemberger, and Pinot Noir, and a méthode champenoise sparkling wine with no dosage.

Wine region

Württemberg, Germany

Württemberg is located in southwest Germany, centered on the Neckar River and its tributaries including the Rems, east of Stuttgart. The Remstal-Stuttgart sub-region, where Weingut Knauss is based, sits at elevations between 300 and 400 meters above sea level on hillsides that layer gypsum keuper, shell limestone, sandstone, and marl soils on top of one another as altitude increases. The climate is continental with hot summers and cold winters, moderated by the shelter of the Black Forest and Swabian Jura and by the river valleys themselves.

Württemberg grows more red wine than white, with Trollinger and Lemberger dominating plantings. Riesling is the leading white variety and, on the region's alkaline limestone and keuper soils, produces wines that are historically fermented dry: firm, mineral, and high in acidity. The Remstal-Stuttgart area is home to notable single-vineyard sites including the Altenberg and Nonnenberg in Strümpfelbach, which appear in Knauss's single-vineyard bottlings. The Württemberg-Remstal appellation covers the vineyards along the Rems valley running east from Stuttgart.
