Tasting notes

Kerner at this address is dry and direct — white peach and pear fruit backed by a firm citrus acidity and the chalky mineral edge you get from Remstal limestone and keuper soils. It is a more textured, aromatic take on a Swabian white than a straight Riesling would be, with a slightly broader mouthfeel and a floral top note.

This Kerner comes from Weingut Knauss in Strümpfelbach, a village in the Remstal sub-region of Württemberg, southern Germany. The vineyards sit at 300–400 meters elevation on a layered mix of Gipskeuper, Mergel, Schilfsandstein, and Stubensandstein soils — sedimentary formations that keep yields in check and push mineral tension into the wine. The estate covers 14 hectares farmed under certified organic viticulture, with grapes harvested by hand.

Kerner is a crossing of Trollinger and Riesling, bred in 1929 in Lauffen, Württemberg. It shares Riesling's aromatic intensity and high acidity but tends toward a slightly fuller body and more pronounced floral character. At Knauss, it is fermented with native yeasts and raised entirely in stainless steel, bottled dry and without fining or filtration.

La Boutanche is a collaboration between Selection Massale and a handful of natural winemakers across Europe, aimed at producing low-intervention, everyday-drinking wines. Andi Knauss handles the German contributions. Natural fermentations and minimal sulfur are standard across his range, with some cuvées receiving none at all.

Works well with pan-seared trout or whitefish, where the acidity cuts through the fat cleanly. Also try it alongside fresh goat cheese, herb-dressed grain salads, or light pasta with butter and herbs. The floral aromatics hold up against mild spice, so a Thai-style green papaya salad is a solid pairing.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Boutanche A. Knauss

Weingut Knauss is located in Strümpfelbach in the Remstal-Stuttgart area of Württemberg. For earlier generations of the family, winemaking was a secondary occupation alongside work at the nearby Mercedes-Benz factory. Andi Knauss took over the estate in 2004 after completing wine school and an apprenticeship in Austria, where he learned organic viticulture. The estate now covers 14 hectares and produces around 75,000 bottles annually.

The vineyards sit on layered sedimentary soils — Gipskeuper, Mergel, Schilfsandstein, Kieselsandstein, and Stubensandstein — at 300–400 meters elevation in the hills around the Rems river. Farming is certified organic. Knauss farms over one hundred individual parcels in Strümpfelbach and surrounding villages, selecting specific plots for single-vineyard or selection bottlings. The estate grows Riesling, Kerner, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Trollinger, Lemberger, Pinot Noir, and Merlot.

Winemaking at Knauss follows a low-intervention approach throughout. Native yeast fermentations are standard. Sulfur additions are minimal across the range, with some cuvées receiving none. The La Boutanche wines are fermented and raised in stainless steel, bottled dry. Knauss has also produced a zero-dosage Riesling sparkling wine using the traditional method, and a Trollinger bottled with no additives of any kind.

Wine region

Württemberg, Germany

Württemberg is Germany's fourth-largest wine region by area, with around 11,400 hectares under vine concentrated along the Neckar River and its tributaries — the Rems, Enz, Kocher, and Jagst. Vineyards run predominantly on south-facing slopes, many of them steep and terraced, between 300 and 400 meters above sea level. The continental climate brings hot summers, sunny autumns, and cold winters. Two thirds of the vineyards are on inclines. The soils shift across the region through distinct sedimentary layers: Muschelkalk (shell limestone), Keuper sandstone and gypsum marl, and Schilfsandstein (reed sandstone) — formations that are low in nutrients and force deep root development.

Württemberg is Germany's primary red wine region, with 65 percent of plantings in red varieties, led by Trollinger, Lemberger (Blaufränkisch), Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier), and Pinot Noir. Riesling dominates white wine production. The Remstal, the sub-region east of Stuttgart where Weingut Knauss is based, runs 78 kilometers along the Rems river valley through the districts of Ostalbkreis, Rems-Murr-Kreis, and Ludwigsburg. It is one of the cooler, higher-elevation parts of the region, and historically associated with the most mineral-driven Rieslings in Württemberg. Kerner, a Trollinger-Riesling cross bred in Lauffen, is also a native of this appellation.
