Tasting notes

This is Riesling stretched into unfamiliar territory: skin contact adds grip and amber color, but the grape's electric acidity and limestone minerality stay fully in charge. The savory, citrus-driven core keeps it dry and focused at just 11.5% ABV, making it one of the more compelling low-alcohol orange wines in the Primal lineup.

  • Similar To: For fans of skin-contact Riesling and textured natural whites who want limestone minerality and restrained ABV

Marto Riesling 2019 is a skin-contact white wine made from 100% Riesling grown organically in Flonheim, a village in the western Rheinhessen near the border of the Nahe region. The wine is fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and bottled without fining, filtration, or any additions including sulfites.

The Riesling parcel in Flonheim sits at 330 meters elevation on limestone soils with fossilized sediment. Across vintages, the Marto Riesling is known for its taut, mineral-driven structure, with citrus, stone fruit, and a pronounced savory thread underpinned by the limestone terroir.

Aging takes place in old oak barrels and Mosel casks on the lees. No new wood is used. The skin contact adds textural weight and a light amber hue while preserving Riesling's characteristic high acidity. The 2019 was bottled at 11.5% ABV.

The high acidity and skin tannin make this a natural match for rich, fatty dishes: think pork schnitzel with cream sauce, smoked fish, or aged washed-rind cheeses. It also handles spiced food well — Thai green curry, Vietnamese noodle dishes, and miso-glazed proteins all work. Serve slightly warmer than a typical white, around 54-57F, to let the texture and aromatics open up.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marto

Marto is the label of Martin Wörner, a winemaker from Flonheim in the western Rheinhessen. The Wörner family has farmed in the area for several generations. Martin's grandfather was among the first growers in Flonheim to bottle wine under his own name rather than sell to the local cooperative. When Martin's father took over, wine production was set aside in favor of organic fruit farming, with grapes sold to other producers. Martin took over the family vineyards in 2015 and launched the first Marto vintage in 2017, initially producing around 2,500 bottles from a single hectare.

Before starting Marto, Martin trained at Gut Oggau in Burgenland, Austria, with Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe in 2015, and in 2016 at Matassa in the Roussillon with Tom Lubbe. The Matassa stage was particularly formative: harvesting in the south of France before returning to Rheinhessen in the same year gave Martin the experience of two consecutive harvests with newly learned winemaking principles. Tom Lubbe also gave Martin two old demi-muids for his first harvest, which began the estate's practice of aging in used wood. Martin's partner Alanna Lagamba, who produces wines under the Vin de la Gamba label, is a full partner in both vineyard and cellar work. The estate has grown from the initial 8 hectares inherited from his grandfather to 13 hectares.

Martin farms organically, without certification, with some biodynamic principles applied. Cover crops of radishes, beetroots, and turnips are grown throughout the vineyards to assist soil health and reduce erosion on steeper slopes. Sheep graze between rows to manage grass, and no tilling is done. In the cellar, all wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged in old barrels, foudres, and Mosel casks on the lees, and bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without any additions.

Wine region

Rheinhessen, Germany

Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine-growing region by area, covering approximately 26,760 hectares in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It sits in the Rhine Valley on the left bank, bounded by the Nahe River to the west and the Rhine to the north and east. The region's interior is a gently rolling landscape, sometimes called the 'land of 1,000 hills,' with terrain ranging from broad plains to steeper slopes near Bingen and along the Rheinterrasse south of Mainz. The climate is among the driest in Germany, with roughly 500mm of annual rainfall and around 1,600 hours of sunshine per year. The Taunus hills to the north and the Odenwald to the east provide shelter from harsh winds, extending the growing season.

Soils vary considerably across the region, shifting from loess, limestone, and loam on the plateau interior to red Rotliegend slate on the steep Rhine-facing slopes of Nackenheim and Nierstein. Flonheim, in the western Rheinhessen, is known for its characteristic sandstone and also contains parcels of limestone with fossilized sediment at higher elevations. Riesling is now the most planted variety in Rheinhessen, with over 5,400 hectares under vine, concentrated on higher-elevation and hillside exposures. Many of Germany's aromatic crossing varieties — Scheurebe, Bacchus, Würzer, and Faberrebe — were developed here by viticulturist Georg Scheu in the early twentieth century and still appear widely in the region's vineyards.
