Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marto

Marto is the label of Martin Wörner, a winemaker from Flonheim, a small village in the western Rheinhessen near the border of the Nahe region. The Wörner family has farmed land in Flonheim for generations. Martin's grandfather was among the first growers in the village to bottle wine under his own name rather than selling grapes to the local cooperative. When Martin's father took over, the family moved away from wine production, selling organic grapes to other producers while running a strawberry farm. Martin returned to winemaking in 2016, working the family's vines from the following harvest with a different approach.

Before starting his own label, Martin trained with two of the most closely watched natural wine producers in Europe. In 2015 he worked at Gut Oggau in Burgenland, Austria, with Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe. In 2016 he worked at Matassa in the Roussillon with Tom Lubbe, an experience he has described as formative, particularly for working with aromatic varieties and understanding the primacy of vineyard work. His first vintage under the Marto label was 2017. Production was small initially, around 2,500 bottles, and the wines sold out quickly.

Today, Marto farms approximately five hectares in Flonheim, with organic practices and some biodynamic work. Cover crops of radishes, beetroot, and turnips are grown throughout the vineyards; sheep graze between the rows; and no tilling is done. His partner Alanna Lagamba, who makes wines under her own Vin de la Gamba label, also plays a role in the estate. All wines are hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, aged in old barrels, foudres, and Mosel casks, and bottled without fining, filtration, or additions.

On Primal Wine, the Marto range includes Marto Manna Rheinischer Landwein and Marto Crazy Crazy Pet-Nat. Browse these and more in our best-sellers collection.

Wine region

Rheinhessen, Germany

Rheinhessen is the largest wine-producing region in Germany by vineyard area, covering around 26,500 hectares in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is bounded by the Rhine to the north and east, with the Nahe region forming its western border. The terrain is gently rolling, with a mix of valleys and plateau areas, and the soils vary considerably across the zone. Sandstone is predominant in the western portions of the region, including around the village of Flonheim where the Marto estate is based. Other soil types across Rheinhessen include limestone, loess, and clay, which contribute to the stylistic diversity of wines produced across its 136 villages.

For much of the second half of the twentieth century, Rheinhessen was associated primarily with high-volume, residually sweet wines aimed at export markets, particularly the Liebfraumilch category. The collapse of that market from the late 1980s onwards prompted a long and gradual shift toward dry wine production and a renewed focus on site expression and grape variety character. The region's revival has been particularly visible among a younger generation of producers who arrived in the 2010s, many of them trained at natural wine estates in France and Austria before returning to family vineyards in the Rheinhessen.

The climate in Rheinhessen is one of the driest in Germany, with the Rhine and surrounding hills providing a degree of moderation. This relatively warm and dry continental climate suits a wide range of varieties, from Riesling and Silvaner on hillside exposures to the aromatic crossings, Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Kerner, Bacchus, and Würzer, that were planted extensively during the postwar expansion period and now find new expression in the hands of producers like Marto.
