Tasting notes

This is one of very few German orange wines built around aromatic varieties like Bacchus and Huxelrebe on the skin, which gives the wine a distinctive elderflower and rhubarb character that you won't find in any skin-contact wine from France or Italy. The Westhofen limestone soils keep everything taut and mineral, even at 10.5% ABV.

Cuvée Weiss is a multi-variety white blend from Jason Groebe of Weingut Bergkloster, based in Westhofen in the Wonnegau subzone of Rheinhessen. The blend includes Bacchus, Huxelrebe, Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder), Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), Sauvignon Blanc, and a small portion of Riesling, all grown on limestone and clay-marl soils and farmed organically under certified EU organic practices.

In the cellar, Bacchus and Huxelrebe are whole-bunch crushed and fermented individually on their skins, while Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling are direct-pressed. The juices ferment spontaneously with native yeasts and age for approximately nine months in large neutral oak barrels ranging from 1,200L to 4,500L, with a smaller portion in stainless steel. Everything is blended at bottling with no fining, no filtration, and zero added sulfites.

The result is a light, low-alcohol orange wine with bright stone fruit, rhubarb, and elderflower aromatics, carried by high-tension acidity and a mineral finish from the limestone-heavy soils of Westhofen. At around 10.5% ABV, it drinks easily across a wide range of food situations.

Works well with spiced dishes like Thai green curry, Vietnamese summer rolls, or Korean pajeon where aromatic whites typically shine. The wine's natural texture from skin contact also makes it a good match for charcuterie boards, soft washed-rind cheeses, or a simple plate of smoked fish. Serve well-chilled at around 48–52°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Bergkloster

Weingut Bergkloster is a family estate based in Westhofen, Rheinhessen, operated by the Groebe family. The winery's Huguenot ancestors began farming the site in the 18th century, and the family has managed the Bergkloster property for over 120 years. Jason Groebe is the fifth generation to run the estate. He completed his viticultural apprenticeship in 2013, worked at established Rheinhessen estates including Wittmann, and then studied enology at Geisenheim University before returning to take over production.

The estate farms approximately 8 to 9 hectares of vineyards around Westhofen, including parcels in the Aulerde, Kirchspiel, Morstein, and Steingrube sites. Organic certification was obtained in 2006. From 2018 onward, Jason transitioned the estate fully to low-intervention, zero-additive winemaking: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites at any stage.

Grapes are hand-harvested selectively. In the cellar, different varieties are handled separately depending on the wine: aromatic varieties like Bacchus and Huxelrebe go through skin maceration, while others are direct-pressed. Wines age on full lees in large neutral oak barrels before blending and bottling without any additions.

Wine region

Rheinhessen, Germany

Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine region by area, covering approximately 27,000 hectares on the left bank of the Rhine in a rough triangle between Mainz, Worms, and Bingen. The region is divided into three sub-areas: Bingen in the northwest, the Rheinterrasse in the east, and the Wonnegau in the south. Mountain ranges to the west provide protection from rain, resulting in low precipitation, warm summers, and mild winters that allow reliable ripening across a wide range of grape varieties.

The Wonnegau, where Bergkloster is based, is one of the warmest and driest pockets in all of Germany. Soils here are dominated by calcareous clay-marl, the product of ancient coral sediment, which gives wines a stony mineral character and structure. The village of Westhofen sits within the Wonnegau and is home to several of Rheinhessen's most acclaimed single vineyard sites including Morstein, Kirchspiel, and Aulerde. Key grapes across the region include Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc, though producers like Bergkloster also work with aromatic crossing varieties such as Bacchus and Huxelrebe.
