Tasting notes

Pale gold with silvery highlights and a slight haze. The nose shows lemon zest, white peach, chalk, and a thread of petrichor, with the barrel lending a faint, restrained spice note. On the palate, the acidity is taut and saline, with stone fruit and a long, mineral finish.

Marto Riesling Rheinischer Landwein 2023 is a dry white wine produced by Marto, the label of Martin Wörner, from a single parcel of 60-year-old Riesling vines in Flonheim, Rheinhessen. The vineyard sits at 330 meters elevation on limestone soils with fossilized sediment. Grapes are hand-harvested and direct-pressed, then fermented with native yeasts and aged for a minimum of 14 months in old oak barrels on the lees. The dry conditions of 2023 allowed for a late harvest at full ripeness. Marto Riesling Rheinischer Landwein 2023 is bottled at 12% ABV, unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfites.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Marto

Marto is the label of Martin Wörner, a winemaker from Flonheim in the western Rheinhessen. The Wörner family has farmed in the area for several generations. Martin's grandfather was among the first growers in Flonheim to bottle wine under his own name rather than sell to the local cooperative, and it was this tradition of farm-bottled wine that Martin returned to when he took over the family vineyards in 2015. His father had moved away from wine production, selling organic grapes to other producers while running a strawberry and fruit farm. Martin's first vintage under the Marto label was 2017, beginning with a single hectare and around 2,500 bottles.

Before starting Marto, Martin trained at Gut Oggau in Burgenland, Austria, with Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe in 2015, and in 2016 at Matassa in the Roussillon with Tom Lubbe. The Matassa stage was pivotal: harvesting in the south of France before returning to Rheinhessen gave Martin two consecutive harvests in the same year, with freshly learned principles applied immediately at home. Tom Lubbe also gave Martin two old demi-muids for his first harvest, which began the estate's practice of aging in old wood. All wines at Marto are fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in old barrels, foudres, and Mosel casks, with nothing added at any stage.

From the initial 8 hectares of predominantly aromatic varieties inherited from his grandfather, Martin has deliberately replanted portions with Riesling and Pinot Noir, and has also acquired older Riesling parcels in the area. Vivant Selections confirms the estate now covers 13 hectares. His partner Alanna Lagamba, who produces wines under the Vin de la Gamba label, is a full partner in both vineyard and cellar work.

Wine region

Rheinhessen, Germany

Rheinhessen is the largest wine-producing region in Germany by vineyard area, covering around 26,500 hectares in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is bounded by the Rhine to the north and east, with the Nahe region forming its western border. The terrain is gently rolling, with a mix of valleys and plateau areas, and the soils vary considerably across the zone. Sandstone is predominant in the western portions of the region, including around the village of Flonheim where the Marto estate is based. Other soil types across Rheinhessen include limestone, loess, and clay, which contribute to the stylistic diversity of wines produced across its 136 villages.

For much of the second half of the twentieth century, Rheinhessen was associated primarily with high-volume, residually sweet wines aimed at export markets, particularly the Liebfraumilch category. The collapse of that market from the late 1980s onwards prompted a long and gradual shift toward dry wine production and a renewed focus on site expression and grape variety character. The region's revival has been particularly visible among a younger generation of producers who arrived in the 2010s, many of them trained at natural wine estates in France and Austria before returning to family vineyards in the Rheinhessen.

The climate in Rheinhessen is one of the driest in Germany, with the Rhine and surrounding hills providing a degree of moderation. This relatively warm and dry continental climate suits a wide range of varieties, from Riesling and Silvaner on hillside exposures to the aromatic crossings, Müller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Kerner, Bacchus, and Würzer, that were planted extensively during the postwar expansion period and now find new expression in the hands of producers like Marto.

Do I have to sign upon delivery?

Yes, someone 21 years or older must sign for the package.

Signature on delivery is mandatory for wine deliveries. Please make sure someone is at the shipping address to sign for the package.

If applicable, please consider delivering the package to a business address to ensure someone is available to sign for the package.

We also have the option of delivering the package to a Carrier's store for pickup. Please reach out to us to coordinate.

Carrier will try to delivery a package up to three times before returning the package to us.

What if I miss a delivery?

Worry not, we have options, but please read carefully.

If you miss a delivery and a package gets returned to us we have two options:

1) Reship the package right away: due to the very high cost of shipping and returns, we must charge a re-shipping fee to be determined based on package size and shipping destination.

2) Consolidate the returned package with your next order: this option is free of charge and it's the most popular option.
