Tasting notes

Trollinger rosé is about as off-the-beaten-path as German wine gets — tart cranberry, wild strawberry, and a floral spice note, all held together by the grape's characteristically high acidity. Saignée production keeps the color pale and the texture lean, making this one of the most refreshing, food-friendly rosés in the portfolio.

La Boutanche Rosé is a dry, 100% Trollinger rosé from six vineyards in and around Strümpfelbach, a village in the Remstal hills east of Stuttgart. Vines range from 12 to 33 years old and are grown on limestone and keuper soils at 300–400 meters elevation. The wine is made primarily by saignée from Andi Knauss's Trollinger red.

Fermentation is carried out with native yeast in stainless steel, where the wine also ages before bottling with a minimal sulfur addition. The result is bone-dry, with no oak influence, preserving the grape's natural acidity and light-bodied structure. Trollinger, known as Schiava in northern Italy, produces wines with notably high acidity for a red grape — here averaging 7 to 10 g/litre — which makes it an especially lively rosé base.

Andi Knauss took over Weingut Knauss in 2004 after training in Austria, where he learned organic viticulture. The estate covers 14 hectares across more than 100 plots in Strümpfelbach and surrounding villages in the Württemberg-Remstal appellation. Natural fermentations and minimal sulfur are standard across the range.

La Boutanche is a label created by importer Selection Massale for everyday-drinking natural wines at approachable prices. Andi Knauss produces the rosé version, bottled in a one-liter format under a screw cap. It is designed for immediate drinking and does not require aging.

The high acidity and light body make this a reliable match for charcuterie, fresh goat cheese, grilled white fish, and lightly dressed salads. It handles acidic sauces — tomato-based pastas, vinaigrettes — better than most rosés. Serve well-chilled at around 45–48°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Andi Knauss

Weingut Knauss is based in Strümpfelbach, a village in the Remstal hills east of Stuttgart. For earlier generations of the family, winemaking was a side activity pursued after shifts at the nearby Mercedes-Benz factory. Andi Knauss trained at wine school and completed a stage in Austria, where he learned organic vineyard management, before taking over the estate in 2004.

The estate covers 14 hectares across more than 100 individual plots in Strümpfelbach and several surrounding villages in the Württemberg-Remstal appellation. Vineyards are certified organic and planted on a range of soil types including limestone and keuper at elevations of 300–400 meters. Grape varieties include Trollinger, Riesling, Lemberger, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Kerner, and Müller-Thurgau.

Natural fermentations with indigenous yeast and minimal sulfur additions are standard throughout the range. Some cuvées are bottled with zero sulfur. Andi Knauss produces the La Boutanche label in partnership with importer Selection Massale — a line of everyday-priced natural wines in one-liter screw-cap bottles designed for immediate drinking.

Wine region

Württemberg, Germany

Württemberg is Germany's largest red wine region by volume, with vineyards concentrated along the Neckar River and its tributaries, including the Rems. The Remstal subzone sits east of Stuttgart, where hillside vineyards at 300–400 meters elevation benefit from mild temperatures moderated by the Black Forest and Swabian Jura. Soils in the area include shell-limestone, keuper (a Triassic-era sandstone-marl), loess, and clay — all reflected in the firm minerality and acidity of wines grown here.

Trollinger accounts for roughly 16–17% of all Württemberg plantings, making it the region's signature red grape. It is grown almost exclusively in Württemberg; virtually no plantings exist elsewhere in Germany. Trollinger (Schiava Grossa) is a late-ripening variety requiring warm, well-exposed sites and produces wines with high natural acidity — 7 to 10 g/litre — and a light ruby to pale red color. Riesling is the dominant white variety, planted on the cooler, western-facing slopes of the Rems Valley.
