Description

Meigamma Rosso Zero is a natural red wine from Sardinia, Italy, crafted by the boutique winery Meigamma, founded by Barbara and Giuseppe Pusceddu in 2006. It's a blend of Bovale, Cannonau, and Barbera Sarda, indigenous Sardinian grape varieties. The grapes are sourced from Meigamma's organically farmed 1.1-hectare vineyard, situated on sandy soils approximately 600 meters from the sea in Villasimius, Sardinia. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts occurs in stainless steel tanks. The wine undergoes a 6-day maceration period, it's aged in stainless steel on the lees, and bottled without clarification or filtration.

Why we like it

Bright ruby red, with notes of red berries and pomegranate, complemented by subtle earthy nuances. Medium-bodied with lively acidity, showcasing flavors of fresh red fruits, a touch of spice, and a well-integrated tannic structure.

Producer profile

Meigamma

Meigamma, nestled in Villasimius, Cagliari Province of Sardinia, is renowned for its dedication to natural winemaking. Founded in 2006 by Barbara and Giuseppe Pusceddu, the estate covers 1.1 hectares of vineyards. Here, Cannonau, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Muristellu thrive on sandy soils. From the outset, Barbara and Giuseppe have been committed to a chemical-free approach, eschewing herbicides, pesticides, and other synthetic products in their vineyards. In the cellar, their philosophy of minimal intervention continues. They avoid using selected yeasts or additives, ensuring the wines' pure expression. Meigamma's wines are distinct, bottled, unfined, and unfiltered, showcasing the true essence of Sardinian terroir.

Wine region

Sardinia, Italy

Surrounded by striking blue-green waters, private beach coves, medieval castles, and the freshest seafood, Sardegna (or Sardinia) is full of wonder and discovery. "The Emerald Coast," once famously named, is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, following Sicily. It has roughly 1,242 miles of coastline, and the Tyrrhenian Sea surrounds its pristine beaches. It is almost three times the size of the French-owned Corsica, which is located to the north.

Once governed by Carthage, Ancient Rome, the Byzantines, Spanish Arabs, and then Spanish Catalans, the region is bustling with culture, history, and a storyline told through its vineyards. Sardinia is one of five "autonomous regions" in the Italian constitution. This means the island has gone a step further toward protecting its traditions. This separation heavily influences Sardinian wine culture, making the portfolio of vineyards dissimilar to the varieties planted on the mainland.

The provinces of the region are Cagliari (the regional capital), Carbonia-Iglesias, Olbia-Tempio, Oristano, Medio Campidano, Sassari, and Ogliastra. There are roughly 20,000 hectares of vineyards in Sardinia, making it the lowest in wine production of any Italian region. Despite its volume, however, the native grapes and the history of the vines tell a powerful story. Sardinian wines are glorious.
