Producer profile

Fattoria di Gratena

Fattoria di Gratena, established in 1994, is committed to organic farming, managing 18 hectares of vineyards and 1,600 olive trees. This estate, situated in a unique microclimate surrounded by extensive woodlands, operates like a natural preserve, safeguarding its land from non-organic influences.

Organic manure is used for soil enrichment, and copper and sulfur are the only treatments applied. Manual harvesting is a crucial practice here, allowing for precise selection of crops. The fermentation process is natural, relying on indigenous yeasts and steel tanks positioned outdoors to leverage natural temperature variations. Post-fermentation, the wine matures in tanks within their cellar without adding sulfites.

For Fattoria di Gratena, the concept of "Terroir" is central, reflecting their deep respect for the land and significantly shaping their wines' character. They focus on native grape varieties, notably Sangiovese and the unique Gratena Nero grape. Recognized in Italy's Official Gazette in 2010, Gratena Nero gained its official Tuscan grape status thanks to research by Prof. Attilio Scienza from Milan University. Fattoria di Gratena's dedication to organic and natural winemaking is a defining feature of their wines.

Wine region

Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany, nestled in the heart of Italy, is more than a picturesque landscape. It's a realm with profound historical ties to viticulture. The Etruscans, one of the earliest civilizations in Italy, recognized the richness of Tuscan soil. They started the wine cultivation that has flourished for centuries. The Renaissance period further shaped Tuscany's wine narrative. Artisans, poets, and vintners intermingled, creating a tapestry of culture and winemaking.

The evolution of Tuscany's wine industry witnessed various influences. Each era, from ancient to modern times, added layers to its intricate wine story. Today, Tuscany stands as a testament to its enduring passion for the craft.

The Terroir of Tuscany

The Tuscan terrain stretches across undulating hills, vast valleys, and coastal areas. Such diverse topography grants Tuscany its unique climate variations. The Tyrrhenian Sea caresses the western edge, instilling a mild maritime climate ideal for grape cultivation.

Tuscany's soil composition is equally varied. From the calcareous clay hills of Chianti to the mineral-rich soils of Bolgheri, each terroir imparts distinctive characteristics to the grapes. Organic wine production has thrived in these settings, reflecting a commitment to natural processes and genuine expression of the land.

The Wines of Tuscany

Tuscany boasts a plethora of wines that narrate tales of its rich heritage. Sangiovese is the region's shining star, forming the backbone of iconic wines like Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. These wines capture the very essence of Tuscany.

Beyond Sangiovese, Tuscany has gained acclaim for its 'Super Tuscans' - blends that often feature international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The surge in natural wine practices has further solidified Tuscany's reputation. Producers are increasingly focusing on minimal intervention, underscoring the region's dedication to authenticity and environmental harmony.
