Seedlip Guide: Grove 42, Spice 94, Garden 108 and Notas de Agave

Seedlip is a British brand of distilled non-alcoholic spirits. Grove 42 tastes of orange, lemon and ginger with Japanese sansho pepper, Spice 94 of allspice and cardamom with a bitter finish, Garden 108 of peas and garden herbs, and Notas de Agave of prickly pear, lime and agave. The brand's own serve is 1.7 oz (50 ml) over ice, topped with tonic and a garnish.

Seedlip lists no juniper in any of its expressions. For a gin-style non-alcoholic spirit, we carry Lyre's Dry London Spirit and Abstinence Cape Floral, both made with juniper.

What Seedlip is

Ben Branson founded Seedlip in England and launched its first spirit, Spice 94, at Selfridges in London on November 4, 2015. On its website, Seedlip says Branson found the idea in The Art of Distillation, a book of non-alcoholic herbal distillations that the physician John French published in 1651. The name comes from seedlips, the baskets a Lincolnshire farming family of the same period used to sow seed by hand. The brand's website carries a Diageo copyright.

Seedlip macerates and distills each botanical on its own in a copper pot still, then blends, filters and bottles the distillates. For Grove 42, the botanicals steep in neutral grain spirit and water, and the distillation removes the alcohol. For Notas de Agave, Seedlip says the process takes 6 weeks.

Seedlip lists its spirits as having no sugar and no calories.
