Le Coste Litrozzo Rosso 2023

Regular price $30.00
Bright ruby red with a translucent, youthful hue. The nose is clean and fruit-forward, with red cherry, wild strawberry, a trace of black licorice, and a faint mineral volcanic note. On the palate, light and juicy with soft tannins, fresh acidity, and a clean, easy finish.
  • Style: Dry, light-to-medium-bodied red; the short maceration and early pressing produce a wine built on freshness and fruit rather than tannin and extraction; the volcanic terroir of Lake Bolsena contributes a mineral, slightly saline note
  • Grapes & terroir: Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Merlot; organically and biodynamically farmed volcanic soils near Montefiascone, Lake Bolsena, northern Lazio; iron-rich volcanic tuff at around 1,475 feet altitude; a mild climate with moderate continental and Mediterranean influences; all vineyard work done by hand
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; destemmed; short skin maceration of a few days; pressed to tank; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts; rested until spring bottling; unfined, unfiltered; no added sulfites; no additions of any kind
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve lightly chilled at 55–58°F; no decanting needed
  • Pairing: Porchetta di Ariccia (Italian roast pork from the Lazio tradition)

Product description

Le Coste Litrozzo Rosso 2023 is a dry red wine made from Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Merlot grown on organically and biodynamically farmed volcanic soils near Montefiascone and Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio. The grapes are destemmed and spend a few days macerating on the skins before being pressed to tank, where wild fermentation with indigenous yeasts proceeds naturally. Produced by Le Coste, run by Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clémentine Bouveron in Gradoli, the wine rests until spring bottling. Le Coste Litrozzo Rosso 2023 is unfined, unfiltered, and bottled without added sulfites in a one-liter format. Vin de Table (Vino da Tavola), Italy.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Le Coste

Le Coste di Gradoli was founded in 2004 by Gianmarco Antonuzzi and Clémentine Bouveron. Gianmarco grew up spending summers in Gradoli, the small hilltop village on the northwestern shore of Lake Bolsena where the estate is based. After training as a sommelier, he spent years working in France with some of that country's most influential natural wine producers, including Bruno Schueller in Alsace, Didier Barral in the Languedoc, Jean-Paul Thévenet in Beaujolais, and Philippe Pacalet in Burgundy. It was in Alsace that he met Clémentine Bouveron, a scientifically trained agronomist who had been working in French vineyards. They married and returned together to Gradoli, where they bought three hectares of abandoned land and started building Le Coste from nothing.

Two decades later, the estate covers approximately 14 hectares, including vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, oak woodland, orchards, and areas of spontaneous wild herbs — a genuine polyculture that supports biodiversity throughout the property. The vineyard density in many parcels reaches up to 10,000 vines per hectare, and many blocks contain ungrafted vines and massale selections that preserve genetic material from the local viticultural heritage. All work is done by hand.

Although Le Coste operates according to biodynamic principles, it is not Demeter certified — and in practice, the amounts of copper and sulfur used, when used at all, fall well below what biodynamic certification would permit. In the cellar, which occupies an ancient building in Gradoli's historic center, every wine is fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. No fining, no filtration, no additions of any kind — including sulfites — are used. The Litrozzo line, bottled in one-liter format, represents the everyday expression of this philosophy: direct, joyful, and built for drinking.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lake Bolsena sits in the northernmost corner of Lazio, roughly 90 miles north of Rome, and holds the distinction of being the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The lake was formed when an ancient Etruscan-era volcanic crater collapsed, and the surrounding landscape still reflects this geological origin: the soils are predominantly tuff, volcanic ash, and iron-rich mineral deposits that drain well and give the wines grown here a distinctive stony, saline character.

The area around Lake Bolsena has been farmed continuously since Etruscan times, long before the Romans arrived. The town of Gradoli, where Le Coste is based, sits on the northwestern shore of the lake at roughly 1,600 feet altitude, on slopes that face the water and benefit from the lake's moderating influence on temperature. The broader zone — sometimes called Alta Tuscia — spans the border between Lazio and Umbria and is home to a diverse range of indigenous grape varieties, many of them found nowhere else.

The climate here falls between Mediterranean and continental. Winters are cold and wet, summers are warm but not extreme, and the lake tempers temperature swings throughout the growing season. The altitude of the vineyards around Gradoli and Montefiascone, typically between 1,300 and 1,800 feet, gives the wines their freshness and natural acidity, which is a defining quality of the best wines made in this zone.

Montefiascone, where the grapes for the Litrozzo Rosso are grown, is perhaps best known historically for its Est! Est!! Est!!! white wine, one of Italy's oldest denominations. But the volcanic plateau on which Montefiascone sits, overlooking the southern shore of Lake Bolsena, also produces red wines of genuine freshness and mineral character, shaped by the same iron-rich volcanic tuff that defines the whole lake basin.
