Producer profile

Agricola Cirelli

Francesco Cirelli is a renowned winemaker in the Abruzzo region of Italy. He is known for his dedication to organic and biodynamic farming. His vineyards are home to grapes like Montepulciano and Pecorino, flourishing in the area's clay and limestone soils. His winemaking style focuses on minimal intervention.

Since 2006, his estate has been certified organic. Cirelli's farm is diverse, including a variety of crops and livestock. He keeps geese for natural weed control in his vineyards. He also grows garlic and olives and produces cured meats and vegetables.

Cirelli uses amphorae in his winemaking process. This choice reflects his commitment to a unique expression of his wines and the Abruzzo region. His amphorae are specially made by an artisan in Impruneta. They are designed with stainless steel lids to reduce oxidation during fermentation.

His Cerasuolo wine, a traditional Abruzzo wine, has received praise for its simplicity and authenticity. It stands as a symbol of the region's winemaking tradition. Cirelli's wines have gained popularity among those who appreciate the natural and terroir-driven approach to viticulture.

Cirelli's philosophy is to showcase the terroir in his wines. He doesn't categorize his wines strictly as natural or artisan. He focuses on creating wines that highlight the distinct features of their origin.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

The viticultural roots of Abruzzo delve deep into ancient history, with civilizations like the Romans laying the groundwork for the region's esteemed wine traditions. Over the millennia, Abruzzo has evolved, absorbing influences from various cultures and trade networks. This amalgamation of historical interactions has solidified its standing in the wine industry, particularly in the realm of organic and natural wine production.

Geographically diverse, Abruzzo's terroir spans from the Adriatic coastlines to the Apennine mountains, resulting in a multifaceted microclimate. The soil, enriched with clay, limestone, and distinct minerals, offers a nurturing environment conducive to grape cultivation. Each sub-region within Abruzzo, whether coastal or mountainous, imparts a unique terroir expression, influencing the region's wine profile.

Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, the region's signature wines, are globally acknowledged for its robust character and depth. Yet, Abruzzo's viticultural spectrum extends beyond this, with white grape varieties such as Pecorino and Passerina holding significance.
