Tasting notes

This is one of the stranger and more compelling things coming out of BC: Riesling and Zweigelt co-fermented on the skins, producing a wine that is pale red, floral, and crunchy with acidity. The whole-cluster inclusion gives it a faint savory grip that keeps the bright fruit honest.

Ultraviolet is a 50/50 co-ferment of Riesling and Zweigelt grown on organic vineyards in West Kelowna, British Columbia, in the Okanagan Valley. Winemaker Tyler Thrussell combined both varieties together at the start of fermentation, using a mix of whole cluster and crushed-destemmed fruit, macerating on the skins for approximately 13 days before pressing to finish fermentation. No yeasts, enzymes, nutrients, sulfites, or any other inputs were added at any point. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The result sits in a category of its own: technically a red wine by grape variety, but pale and high-toned in character from the Riesling component, with the Zweigelt contributing structure, color, and dark berry fruit. The wild co-fermentation produces a wine that is floral, lightly tannic, and vibrant with natural acidity. Sulfite levels are below 10 mg/L total.

Neon Eon is the project of Tyler Thrussell, who began fermenting in 2018. He grew up around wine through his father Rick's Sage Hills Vineyard in Summerland, BC. All Neon Eon wines use organic or biodynamic fruit and follow a strict zero-addition, zero-removal protocol in the cellar. The label artwork changes each vintage, reflecting the same energy as the wines themselves.

Its bright acidity and light tannin make it a natural match for fatty charcuterie, pork rillettes, or a cheese board with washed-rind cheeses. The floral and red-fruit character also works well alongside dishes with a touch of spice, such as Vietnamese pork or Korean fried chicken. Serve well-chilled, around 55F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Neon Eon

Neon Eon is the label of Tyler Thrussell, based in West Kelowna, BC. Thrussell comes from a winemaking family: his father Rick founded Sage Hills Vineyard in Summerland, a property his brother Keenan took over in 2015. Tyler launched Neon Eon separately in 2018 as a personal project focused on minimal-intervention winemaking under his own direction.

All Neon Eon wines are made from organically or biodynamically grown grapes sourced in the Okanagan Valley. The cellar protocol is zero-addition and zero-removal: no added yeasts, sulfites, enzymes, or nutrients, and no fining or filtration before bottling. Finished wines contain less than 10 mg/L total sulfites.

Thrussell works with whole cluster and crushed-destemmed fruit depending on the wine, often combining both approaches in a single ferment as with Ultraviolet. Fermentations are spontaneous with ambient yeast populations. The Ultraviolet is a skin-contact co-ferment of Riesling and Zweigelt, pressed after approximately 13 days on the skins before finishing fermentation off-skins.

Wine region

Okanagan Valley, Canada

The Okanagan Valley runs approximately 250 kilometers north to south through British Columbia's interior, from the US border near Osoyoos up to Lake Country north of Kelowna. It holds a continental climate moderated by the deep glacial Okanagan Lake, which reaches over 230 meters in depth and buffers vineyards on its shores from extreme temperature swings. Summer days regularly exceed 30C while nights drop to around 12C, a wide diurnal range that preserves acidity in the grapes. The region receives very little rainfall and relies heavily on irrigation.

West Kelowna sits on the western shore of Okanagan Lake in the central-north section of the valley, one of the cooler growing areas relative to the desert conditions further south near Oliver and Osoyoos. Soils in the Kelowna area are primarily sandy loam, clay, and gravel deposited by glacial activity, offering good drainage and low fertility. The British Columbia Wine Institute recognizes West Kelowna-Mount Boucherie as a distinct viticultural region within the Okanagan Valley GI. Cool-climate white varieties including Riesling thrive here, alongside aromatic reds such as Zweigelt and Pinot Noir.
