Tasting notes

At 11.5% ABV and with barely a day or two on the skins, this Pinot Noir is closer to a structured rosé in weight — pale ruby, tart red cherry, raspberry, and a mineral-stony edge from the sasso dolomitico soils of Povo. It is the kind of high-altitude red you can chill slightly and pour freely.

Altopiano Rosso is 100% Pinot Noir sourced from Cantina Furlani's small parcels surrounding the village of Povo, directly above the city of Trento, at up to 720 meters elevation on the Vigolana Plateau. Soils are surface clay over schist and broken granite, locally called sasso dolomitico. Vines are trained in the traditional Pergola Trentina system, which promotes airflow and sun exposure in these cool alpine conditions.

In the cellar, grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and pressed softly using a pneumatic press. Skin maceration lasts roughly 1 to 2 days. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in stainless steel, no temperature control. The wine rests on its lees in stainless steel until April before bottling. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, with minimal added sulfur.

The result is a very pale ruby, light-bodied red that sits at 11.5% ABV. The high altitude and continental climate drive freshness and lower alcohol naturally. Expect tart red cherry, raspberry, a whisper of white pepper, and a stony mineral note. Tannins are barely perceptible, making this one of the more versatile and approachable reds in the Furlani lineup.

Furlani is best known as a sparkling wine producer, and the Altopiano Rosso reflects that same house preference for purity and precision over weight. Imported by SelectioNaturel.

Serve lightly chilled alongside cured meats, fresh chevre, or a simple mushroom and herb pasta. The wine's brightness and low tannin also make it a natural match for grilled white fish or a charcuterie spread. Works well as an aperitif on its own.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Furlani

Cantina Furlani is based in Vigolo Vattaro in the province of Trento. Matteo Furlani is a fourth-generation winemaker who took over the family vineyards in the early 2000s, reopening a small cellar that had been closed for approximately 20 years. His father Fabio still works alongside him. Matteo studied agronomy at the Agricultural Institute of San Michele all'Adige rather than formal winemaking, having learned wine production directly from his father and grandfather.

The winery farms approximately 6 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of the Vigolana Plateau and the hills above Trento, reaching altitudes up to 720 meters. Parcels are planted around the village of Povo, directly above the city. Soils are surface clay over schist and broken granite known locally as sasso dolomitico. Vines are trained using the traditional Pergola Trentina method, which allows for ventilation and sun exposure. No pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers have been used by the family across generations; Matteo expanded on this foundation by introducing biodynamic preparations and following lunar cycles for cellar work.

Fermentation at Cantina Furlani uses only indigenous yeasts, with no temperature control. The cellar relies on stainless steel tanks and glass demijohns. For clarification, wines are sometimes racked into demijohns and placed outside in winter snow to settle naturally. Furlani is primarily known for sparkling wines made by the Metodo Interrotto, a hybrid of bottle refermentation and pét-nat using frozen must from harvest rather than added sugar. Still wines like the Altopiano Rosso use the same no-addition philosophy: no fining, no filtration, and minimal to no added sulfur.

Wine region

Trentino, Italy

Trentino is the southern half of the Trentino-Alto Adige autonomous region in far northern Italy, bordering Lombardy to the west and Veneto to the south and east. The region is dominated by the Dolomite Alps, with roughly 70% of the land sitting above 1,000 meters. Vineyards occupy the lower slopes of the Adige Valley and its tributaries, planted at altitudes ranging from the valley floor up to 900 meters in some sites. The climate is continental — hot summers with wide diurnal temperature swings and cold winters — which preserves acidity and keeps alcohol levels moderate in high-elevation sites.

The principal appellation for still wines is Trentino DOC, which covers 74 municipalities across the Adige, Cembra, Vallagarina, Sarca, Valsugana, and Giudicarie valleys. The Dolomites provide natural protection from rain, creating a partial rain shadow over the valley. Native red varieties including Teroldego, Marzemino, Schiava, and Lagrein dominate local production, alongside international varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Trento DOC is a separate appellation established in 1993 specifically for metodo classico sparkling wines. The village of Povo and the Vigolana Plateau above Trento sit at the northern edge of the city, where clay-over-schist soils and dolomitic granite produce wines with pronounced mineral character.
