LIGHT BODYFULL BODY
Sold Out
  • Style: Dry, light-to-medium-bodied orange wine; the brief 13-hour maceration gives texture and a slight tannic grip without heaviness; aromatic and coastal in character, with a saline finish that reflects the Val di Noto terroir
  • Grapes & terroir: 100% Grecanico Dorato; organically farmed on limestone-rich soils near Pachino, Val di Noto; one of Sicily's sunniest and windiest zones, approximately 45km south of Syracuse; white calcareous subsoil contributes minerality and structure to the variety's naturally aromatic profile
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested; 13-hour skin maceration; spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks; 6 months in concrete, 3 months in bottle; unfined; unfiltered; no significant sulfur additions
  • Serving temperature & decanting: Serve at 50–55°F; no decanting needed; works well slightly chilled as an aperitivo or through lighter courses; serve in a white wine glass rather than a large red
  • Pairing: Sarde a beccafico (Sicilian stuffed sardines)
  • Similar to: Friulano skin-contact white, Ramato Pinot Grigio, Josko Gravner-style Ribolla Gialla (lighter end)

Tasting notes

Golden yellow with a light amber tint from skin contact. The nose recalls Mediterranean pine resin, peach, lemon peel, and toasted almond. On the palate, juicy stone fruit and orange citrus meet a hint of ginger, subtle tannic texture, and a briny saline finish with bright acidity.

Food pairings

Sarde a beccafico, Japanese miso-glazed fish, grilled prawns, Lebanese hummus and flatbread, ricotta-stuffed pasta, aged caciocavallo, roasted fennel.

Product description

Cantina Marilina Sikelé Orange 2024 is a skin-contact white wine made from 100% Grecanico Dorato — the Sicilian name for Garganega — grown organically on limestone-rich soils near Pachino in the Val di Noto, southeastern Sicily. Sisters Marilina and Federica Paternò hand-harvest the grapes and give them a brief 13-hour skin maceration before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks. Cantina Marilina Sikelé Orange 2024 then ages six months in concrete and three months in bottle, bottled without fining, filtration, or significant sulfur additions. Sicilia IGP.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Marilina

Cantina Marilina was founded in 2001 by Angelo Paternò on a 60-hectare property near Pachino in the province of Siracusa. Angelo brought 25 years of professional winemaking experience to the project, having previously served as winemaker and technical director at Cantine Settesoli and Duca di Salaparuta, two of Sicily's largest producers. When he purchased the land — on a hill formerly called Poggio dei Fossi — he identified it as one of the finest viticultural sites he had seen on the island, drawn by the white calcareous soils, the elevation, and the natural ventilation.

Angelo has since handed management to his daughters, Marilina and Federica Paternò, who run the estate with a shared commitment to organic farming and minimal intervention. Their approach was shaped in part by Frank Cornelissen, the Belgian winemaker whose work on Mount Etna influenced a generation of Sicilian natural producers. The estate has been certified organic since its first vintage.

Of the 60 hectares, 35 are planted with vines. The rest supports polyculture: olive trees, fruit trees, and mixed farming designed to maintain biodiversity and soil health across the property. The three varieties at the heart of the range — Nero d'Avola, Grecanico Dorato, and Moscato — are all indigenous to southeastern Sicily. The estate also grows smaller amounts of Merlot, Tannat, Viognier, Chardonnay, Insolia, and Moscato Giallo.

In the cellar, large concrete tanks are used for both fermentation and aging across all wines. The choice reflects the sisters' goal of preserving the freshness, aromatics, and mineral character of the fruit without wood influence. Wines are released without fining or filtration, with sulfur kept to a minimum at bottling only.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Val di Noto sits at the southeastern tip of Sicily, spanning the provinces of Siracusa, Ragusa, and Catania. It holds the distinction of being the sunniest territory in Sicily and the second windiest after Trapani, a climatic combination that defines the character of wines produced here. The persistent winds off the Mediterranean and the Strait of Sicily moderate the intense heat of a Sicilian summer, slowing ripening and preserving the natural acidity and aromatic freshness that make the zone's native varieties distinctive.

The dominant geological feature of Val di Noto is its white calcareous limestone soil, which runs through the hillsides around Noto, Pachino, Rosolini, and Avola. These soils drain freely, stress vine roots into deeper growth, and impart a mineral salinity to the wines that is a recognisable characteristic of the zone. They are particularly well suited to Nero d'Avola, Grecanico Dorato, and Moscato, the three indigenous varieties that form the backbone of production here.

Grecanico Dorato, known elsewhere in Italy as Garganega — the grape behind Soave — has been grown in Sicily for centuries and is considered a native variety of the island. In the Val di Noto, it tends toward stone fruit, citrus, and floral aromatics, with a saline, coastal character rooted in the limestone. The variety responds well to brief skin contact, which adds texture and complexity without masking its aromatic expression.

The Val di Noto surrounds and partly overlaps with the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Noto, one of the finest baroque cities in Europe, rebuilt in golden limestone after the earthquake of 1693. The zone also falls within or adjacent to the Eloro DOC and Noto DOC appellations, with the broader Sicilia IGP covering most of Cantina Marilina's wines.
