Product description

From the hills of Montecchio Emilia comes Quarticello Le Mole Malvasia Orange 2022, a skin-contact wine crafted from 100% Malvasia di Candia Aromatica. Roberto Maestri founded Quarticello in 2001 and began producing wine in 2006 after studying viticulture and enology. The estate sits in Val d'Enza on gravelly sand-clay soils. Grapes ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts following extended maceration on skins. Quarticello Le Mole ages on its lees before bottling without fining or filtration. Roberto farms organically, certified since 2015, following biodynamic principles.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Quarticello Azienda Agricola

Quarticello is a family estate located in Montecchio Emilia, in the Val d'Enza at the foot of the Emilian-Tuscan Apennines. The Maestri family purchased the property in 2001. Roberto Maestri's grandfather initially made wine as a hobby. Roberto fell in love with the land and decided to pursue winemaking professionally.

Roberto left to study viticulture and enology at the University of Bologna. He returned to work the vineyards whenever possible. By 2006 he produced his first commercial vintage. Roberto has managed the estate full-time since 2007. Today Quarticello farms approximately five to ten hectares of vines on gravelly sand-clay soils.

The estate achieved organic certification in 2015. Roberto follows biodynamic principles in the vineyard. No synthetic chemicals are used. Only natural products protect the vines. Practices include careful pruning, shoot selection, and manual defoliation. These methods ensure healthy, high-quality grapes at harvest.

Quarticello focuses exclusively on indigenous grape varieties. The estate grows several strains of Lambrusco including Maestri, Salamino, and Grasparossa. White varieties include Malvasia di Candia, Spergola, and Malbo Gentile. Roberto believes native grapes grown in their proper home offer the truest expression of place.

Winemaking stays minimal and traditional. Fermentation relies on wild yeasts only. Roberto uses no additives or corrections. Sparkling wines undergo secondary fermentation in the bottle following the ancestral method common in Emilia-Romagna. Still wines age on their lees. All bottles are released unfiltered.

Roberto's wines pair naturally with the rich cuisine of his region. Lambrusco and salumi. Orange wine and tortelli di zucca. His approach is straightforward. Use indigenous grapes. Farm organically. Ferment with native yeasts. Let the land speak through the wine. Quarticello represents natural wine at its most authentic and drinkable.

Wine region

Emilia–Romagna, Italy

Emilia-Romagna stretches across northern Italy from the Po River plains to the Apennine Mountains. The region borders the Adriatic Sea to the east. It ranks among Italy's largest wine-producing regions. Annual production exceeds 7 million hectoliters. The area is equally famous for its culinary heritage—Parmigiano-Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, balsamic vinegar, and fresh pasta all originate here.

Viticulture dates back to the Etruscans and Romans. The region divides into two historical areas. Emilia covers the western section from Piacenza to Bologna. Romagna extends east toward the coast. Each area maintains distinct winemaking traditions and grape varieties.

Soils vary considerably across the territory. The Po Valley features alluvial deposits of clay, silt, and sand. Hillside vineyards near the Apennines sit on clay-gravel and limestone formations. Val d'Enza around Montecchio Emilia offers gravelly sand-clay soils ideal for Lambrusco and Malvasia.

Lambrusco dominates production. Over 60 varieties exist throughout Italy, but Emilia-Romagna remains the grape's spiritual home. Major strains include Lambrusco Salamino, Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Maestri, and Lambrusco di Sorbara. These sparkling reds range from dry to sweet, light to deeply colored.

White varieties include Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Spergola, Trebbiano, and Albana. Albana di Romagna became Italy's first white wine to receive DOCG status in 1987. Romagna also produces significant quantities of Sangiovese.

The region has embraced natural wine production in recent years. Producers like Quarticello, Vittorio Graziano, Camillo Donati, and La Stoppa farm organically and ferment with indigenous yeasts. Traditional bottle fermentation for sparkling wines continues alongside modern methods. Emilia-Romagna wines pair seamlessly with the region's rich gastronomy—a testament to centuries of food and wine culture evolving together.
