Product description

Cantina Indigeno Mosca Orange 2022 is a skin-contact wine made from 100% Moscato Giallo grapes grown organically near Teramo in Abruzzo, central Italy. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo 14 days of skin maceration, fermenting spontaneously with indigenous yeasts without temperature control. Cantina Indigeno then ages Mosca Orange 2022 for six months in stainless steel tanks before bottling unfiltered and without added sulfites. At 10.5% alcohol, this aromatic orange wine balances Moscato's heady floral perfume with the textural complexity that extended skin contact provides—dry, aromatic, and refreshingly approachable.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends—Alfredo Giugno, Nicola Reginaldi, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara—in Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province of Abruzzo. What began as a garage project has become one of Italy's most exciting natural wine operations, with bottles sought after in wine bars from New York to Tokyo.

The founders' path to winemaking passed through craft beer. Alfredo, an accountant by day, brewed beer on the side; Loreto had experience distributing craft beers. Together they opened La Casa di Cura microbrewery in Crognaleto in 2013. Their background in experimental fermentation proved invaluable when friends from the prominent Lammidia winery encouraged them to try their hand at wine.

Today Cantina Indigeno manages 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards in and around Teramo. Their philosophy centers on reviving neglected vineyard sites and embracing lesser-known local grape varieties to produce fresh, vibrant wines that capture terroir authentically. Most vines are around 30 years old, thriving on stony limestone soils at approximately 300 meters elevation.

In the cellar, intervention stays minimal. Grapes are hand-harvested and typically undergo short whole-bunch maceration. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in fiberglass and stainless steel tanks—occasionally amphorae for specific cuvées. True to their natural wine ethos, they employ no temperature control, fining, filtration, or added sulfites at any stage.

The Mosca showcases their ability with aromatic varieties, transforming Moscato Giallo into something unexpected: a dry, textured orange wine that retains the grape's perfumed character while gaining complexity from skin contact.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo stretches along central Italy's Adriatic coast, a mountainous region framed by the Gran Sasso massif to the west and the sea to the east. Despite producing over 3.1 million hectoliters annually—making it Italy's fifth-largest wine region—Abruzzo remains undervalued internationally, offering remarkable quality at accessible prices.

The geography creates distinctive growing conditions. Vineyards around Teramo sit at elevations around 300 meters, positioned between mountain and sea. The Adriatic provides Mediterranean warmth while the Apennines introduce continental cooling and dramatic day-night temperature swings. This combination extends the growing season, preserving acidity while allowing full aromatic development—particularly important for expressive varieties like Moscato.

Soils consist primarily of stony limestone with clay components, contributing minerality and structure. Many vineyards occupy slopes that were neglected for decades before being revitalized by a new generation of natural winemakers drawn to the region's potential and affordable land prices.

Abruzzo's viticultural identity centers on indigenous varieties. Montepulciano dominates red production (57% of plantings), while Trebbiano leads white wines. But the region also harbors lesser-known grapes—Pecorino, Passerina, Montonico—that are experiencing revival as producers seek distinctive expressions of local terroir.

The natural wine movement has found fertile ground here. Legendary producers like Emidio Pepe and Edoardo Valentini established uncompromising approaches decades ago; newer operations like Cantina Indigeno and Lammidia carry that spirit forward with youthful energy and experimental fermentation techniques rooted in the region's indigenous yeasts and grape varieties.
