Tasting notes

This is coastal Cannonau at full ripeness: dried red cherry and garrigue up front, a thread of white pepper on the finish, and a saline undercurrent that comes directly from the sandy, sea-proximate soils in Villasimius. The zero-additive winemaking keeps the texture raw and alive in a way that polished Cannonau rarely achieves.

Meigamma is a 1.1-hectare estate in Villasimius, in the Cagliari province of southeastern Sardinia. The Cannonau vineyard sits on sandy soils roughly 600 meters from the Mediterranean, within the Capo Ferrato sub-zone of the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC. The constant coastal winds keep the vines healthy and the fruit concentrated despite the heat.

Rosso Secondo is 100% Cannonau, the Sardinian name for Grenache, which DNA analysis shows is genetically identical to the Spanish Garnacha. At 14.5% ABV, it reflects the variety's natural tendency toward full ripeness in Sardinia's hot, dry Mediterranean climate. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts only, without selected strains or additives.

The wine is aged without any fining agents and bottled unfiltered. No sulfites are added until the point of bottling. The result is a wine that carries the full texture and aromatic character of the grape and site without correction or polish.

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-roasted pork, or spit-roasted meats work well against the wine's warmth and fruit. Aged pecorino sardo is a natural match. Works equally well with tomato-based pasta, grilled oily fish like tuna, or a plate of Sardinian charcuterie.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Meigamma

Barbara and Giuseppe Pusceddu founded Meigamma in 2006 in Villasimius, a coastal town in the Cagliari province of southeastern Sardinia. The name comes from the Sardinian dialect word for the post-lunch nap, reflecting a deliberately unhurried approach to both farming and winemaking. The estate produces wine, olive oil, honey, and vegetables from a single contiguous property.

The vineyard covers 1.1 hectares planted with Cannonau, Carignano, and Muristellu, with more recent additions of Nasco and Nuragus. The soils are sandy and the parcels sit approximately 600 meters from the Mediterranean Sea. From the beginning, Barbara and Giuseppe chose organic management: no pesticides, herbicides, or any other synthetic products are used in the vineyard.

In the cellar, the approach is equally non-interventionist. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand. Fermentation proceeds with native yeasts only, without the addition of selected strains. The wines are not fined and not filtered. Sulfites are not added until bottling. Total annual production across all wines is approximately 7,500 bottles.

Wine region

Sardegna, Italy

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean and sits roughly 200 kilometers off the Italian mainland. The Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, established in 1972, covers the entire island and accounts for approximately one in every five bottles of Sardinian wine produced. Three officially recognized sub-zones produce Cannonau of particular distinction: Nepente di Oliena in the eastern Nuoro province, Jerzu in the Nuoro and Ogliastra area, and Capo Ferrato in the southeastern corner, which includes the municipalities of Castiadas, Muravera, San Vito, Villaputzu, and Villasimius in the province of Cagliari. Meigamma's vineyards in Villasimius fall within this Capo Ferrato sub-zone.

Sardinia's climate is classically Mediterranean: hot, dry summers with mild winters and constant wind off the sea. The wind is a year-round presence across both the coast and the interior, reducing humidity and disease pressure in the vineyards. Sandy coastal soils, like those at Meigamma, drain freely and force vine roots deep, yielding lower natural productivity and more concentrated fruit. Cannonau is a thin-skinned, late-ripening variety that thrives in these conditions, producing wines with generous alcohol, soft acidity, light tannins, and aromas of red fruit, garrigue, and white pepper. Bioarchaeological evidence suggests the grape was cultivated in Sardinia as far back as 1200 BC, predating its appearance elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
