Product description

Alessandro Viola Note di Bianco 2024 is crafted from 100% Grillo grapes grown organically on clay soils near Alcamo in northwestern Sicily. The vineyards sit at 220 meters elevation in the Pietra Rinosa district, benefiting from Mediterranean breezes off the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. Alessandro Viola Note di Bianco 2024 undergoes direct pressing followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine ages on its lees for six months before bottling without fining, filtration, or added sulfites. This non-interventionist approach allows Grillo's native character to shine through. 12% ABV.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Alessandro Viola

Alessandro Viola grew up watching his father, a local vine grower, produce small quantities of wine for household consumption. Fascinated by viticulture from an early age, Alessandro pursued formal studies in oenology and viticulture, though he diverged from the industrial techniques being taught. He gained experience working in Piedmont and near Mount Etna before returning to his corner of Sicily with a clear conviction: great wine requires nothing to be added or removed when grapes, soil, and winemaking work in harmony.

Today Alessandro cultivates approximately 12 hectares across two distinct zones. Five hectares on Mount Bonifato near Alcamo sit at 600-700 meters elevation on a geological fault, with sand on one side and limestone on the other. Seven additional hectares in the inland valley around Pietra Rinosa and Santa Ninfa occupy clay soils at around 250 meters. This diversity of terroirs allows him to produce wines with different characters while maintaining his non-interventionist philosophy.

Alessandro farms organically, plowing by hand around vines and planting cover crops to nourish the soil. All vineyards are dry-farmed, relying on abundant underground water. In the cellar, he works exclusively with indigenous yeasts and bottles without fining or filtration. Sulfites, if used at all, appear only as trace amounts at bottling.

The estate focuses entirely on indigenous Sicilian varieties: Grillo and Catarratto for whites, Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese for reds. Alessandro's Catarratto bottlings, particularly Le Mie Origini, have earned widespread acclaim, while his méthode champenoise Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine ranks among Sicily's finest. His brother Aldo Viola operates a separate estate nearby, though their styles differ considerably.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Sicily is Italy's largest island and its third-largest wine-producing region after Veneto and Tuscany. The Strait of Messina separates it from the Italian mainland. The island spans approximately 25,711 square kilometers, with vineyards planted across diverse terroirs from sea level to over 1,000 meters elevation on Mount Etna's slopes.

The climate is predominantly Mediterranean. Coastal areas experience hot, dry summers and mild winters. Higher elevation sites benefit from significant diurnal temperature variation, preserving acidity in the grapes. The island receives abundant sunshine—among the highest in Italy. Rainfall concentrates in winter months. Sea breezes moderate temperatures in coastal vineyards, particularly in the western provinces of Trapani and Agrigento.

Soils vary dramatically across the island. Mount Etna features volcanic soils rich in minerals from ancient lava flows. Western Sicily around Alcamo and Marsala has clay, limestone, and sandy soils. The southeastern corner near Vittoria contains calcareous and sandy terrain. This geological diversity contributes to the range of wine styles produced.

Indigenous grape varieties dominate Sicilian viticulture. Nero d'Avola is the most widely planted red variety, producing full-bodied wines with dark fruit character. Nerello Mascalese thrives on Mount Etna, yielding elegant, Pinot Noir-like reds. White varieties include GrilloCatarratto, Carricante, and Inzolia. International varieties like Syrah and Chardonnay have also found success.

Key appellations include Etna DOC, Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, Marsala DOC, and numerous IGT designations. The Terre Siciliane IGT allows producers flexibility with grape varieties and winemaking techniques.

Sicily has become a center for natural winemaking. Producers like Alessandro Viola, Frank Ferreri, and COS work with organic and biodynamic practices, spontaneous fermentation, and minimal sulfites. The island offers remarkable diversity—from powerful reds to crisp whites, skin-contact orange wines, and the historic fortified wines of Marsala.
