Tasting notes

Most Burgenland whites lean rich and heavy; this one stays precise, with a creamy lees texture that frames the white peach and pear fruit without weighing it down. The six months on unstirred lees preserves a lift that makes it interesting to drink rather than just easy.

Judith Beck's Weissburgunder comes from approximately 2 hectares of certified biodynamic and organic vines on gravel soils (locally called Seewinkelschotter) around the village of Gols in Austria's Neusiedlersee. The vines average around 25 years of age, with parcels split between lower ground near Lake Neusiedl and elevated sites above the town. Pinot Blanc — called Weissburgunder in Austria — ripens mid-harvest, after St. Laurent but before Zweigelt.

Grapes are hand-picked and whole-cluster pressed. Fermentation begins spontaneously with native yeasts in 1,000-liter acacia casks and neutral barriques. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations proceed in wood. The wine then rests on its full lees for six months without stirring, which Beck has said preserves freshness. It is assembled in tank and bottled with a minimal addition of SO2 (20mg/L). The wine is vegan.

In the glass, pale gold with green highlights. The nose leads with white peach, ripe pear, and lemon, with a faint almond note. The palate is medium-bodied with soft, creamy texture from lees contact, balanced acidity, and a clean mineral finish. Whites from this part of Burgenland can run rich and high in alcohol; Beck's version is leaner and more restrained than the regional norm at around 12% ABV.

Beck has been farming biodynamically since 2007 and holds certification from respekt-BIODYN. The estate is also a member of the Pannobile growers' association in Gols, which sets collaborative quality standards for the region.

Works well with roast chicken, pan-seared trout, and soft-rind cheeses like Brie or Gruyere. The creamy texture and lemon-citrus edge also make it a natural match for pasta with cream or butter sauces. Serve at 48-52F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Judith Beck

The Beck family estate is based in Gols, on the northeastern edge of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. Judith's parents, Matthias and Christine Beck, founded the wine-focused estate in 1976, starting with 5 hectares of vines. Judith made her first vintage in 2001 and assumed full control of the winery in 2004. Before returning to Gols, she studied viticulture at the Klosterneuburg Viticulture College and worked at Chateau Cos d'Estournel in Bordeaux, Braida in Piedmont, and Errazuriz in Chile.

In 2007 Judith began transitioning the entire estate to biodynamic farming, joining the respekt-BIODYN association, which certified her first biodynamic vintage in 2010. The estate, now approximately 15 hectares, is certified both organic and biodynamic. Farming practices include cultivating grass between vine rows, applying self-prepared cattle manure compost, and using herbal tea sprays — including yarrow, nettle, and horsetail — to address mildew pressure, which is common given the humidity generated by Lake Neusiedl. No commercial yeasts are used anywhere in the cellar.

In the cellar, Beck's approach is minimal intervention across the range. Whites are whole-cluster pressed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in acacia casks or neutral barriques. Wines are aged on their lees without stirring. Reds ferment in stainless steel or open wooden vats and age in large-format neutral acacia wood casks (1,000-2,000 liters). Beck is also a member of the Pannobile growers' association in Gols, which operates as a collaborative quality control body for the region.

Wine region

Neusiedlersee - Austria, Austria

The Neusiedlersee sits in northeastern Burgenland, Austria's easternmost and warmest wine-growing province, bordering Hungary. The region takes its name from Lake Neusiedl, a shallow steppe lake — only about 1.5 meters deep — that stretches roughly 36 kilometers north to south and covers 320 square kilometers. The lake moderates what is otherwise a strongly continental, Pannonian climate: hot, dry summers with low rainfall and cold winters. Because the shallow water warms quickly, the lake stores and radiates heat throughout the growing season, extending ripening while buffering temperature swings.

Soils in the Neusiedlersee vary significantly. Around Gols — where Judith Beck farms — the dominant soil types are Seewinkelschotter: sandy-limestone gravel, sometimes mixed with black earth. These well-drained, low-fertility soils keep vine vigor in check and concentrate flavor. The Neusiedlersee DAC appellation, established in 2012, is built around Zweigelt, but Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) and Chardonnay are also grown here. Gols is one of the region's key wine villages, and its winemakers — including Beck — are organized under the Pannobile quality association, which champions indigenous varieties and collectively approves wines before they can carry the Pannobile designation.
