Product description

Gut Oggau Mechthild Weiss 2021 is the flagship white cuvée from Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe's biodynamic estate in Burgenland, Austria. Made from 100% Grüner Veltliner sourced from a single vineyard of 60-year-old vines planted in limestone and slate soils, this wine represents the matriarch of the Gut Oggau fictional family. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented spontaneously on skins in large old oak vats before being pressed using the estate's restored 200-year-old vertical screw press. Gut Oggau Mechthild Weiss 2021 ages for two years in used 500-liter barrels. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, with no sulfur added.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gut Oggau

Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck launched Gut Oggau in 2007 after acquiring an abandoned 17th-century winery in the village of Oggau on Lake Neusiedl's western shore. Eduard had worked in conventional winemaking with his father in Styria; Stephanie's family operated Taubenkobel, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Burgenland. The estate had been untended for approximately 20 years—a circumstance that proved advantageous, as chemical residues had cleared from the soils, permitting immediate conversion to biodynamic viticulture.

Today, Gut Oggau maintains full Demeter certification across roughly 25 hectares. Among the estate's restored equipment is a 200-year-old vertical screw press, reserved for the top-tier wines including Mechthild and Bertholdi. Annual production averages 40,000 bottles, making these wines among Austria's most allocated.

The Gut Oggau concept centers on a fictional family. Each wine represents a family member with a distinct personality, illustrated by artist Jung von Matt. Three generations comprise the lineup: children (Theodora, Atanasius, Winifred) come from younger vines on gravel soils, yielding lighter, energetic wines. Parents (Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus, Josephine) derive from warmer sites with greater sun exposure, producing fuller-bodied cuvées. Grandparents (Mechthild, Bertholdi) represent the oldest vines on limestone and slate hillsides—single-vineyard wines with the most structure and aging potential.

Mechthild embodies the family matriarch: resolute, principled, kind-hearted yet occasionally secretive. As a 100% Grüner Veltliner from 60-year-old vines, this wine receives the most traditional treatment—extended skin contact, fermentation in large old oak, pressing on the antique vertical press, and two full years of barrel aging. Produced in tiny quantities, Mechthild ranks among the most expensive Grüner Veltliners in Burgenland.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland lies along Austria's eastern border with Hungary, its landscape defined by the Pannonian Plain and the shallow expanse of Lake Neusiedl. This region encompasses approximately 32,200 acres of vineyards, making it Austria's second-largest wine-growing area and its warmest. The lake, Europe's largest steppe lake, exerts a moderating influence on temperatures while generating humidity that shapes both dry wine production and the botrytized dessert wines for which the area is renowned.

Oggau sits on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl within the Neusiedlersee zone. Hillside vineyards above the village feature limestone and slate soils—markedly different from the gravel deposits found on flatter terrain closer to the lake. These older geological formations produce wines with pronounced mineral character and structure, qualities that distinguish the estate's top cuvées. The Pannonian climate delivers warm continental conditions, with hot Hungarian air meeting cooler Alpine breezes from the west, extending the growing season while allowing grapes to retain acidity.

Burgenland divides into four DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) zones. Neusiedlersee wraps around the lake, while Leithaberg in the north showcases mineral whites and reds from ancient soils. Mittelburgenland centers on Blaufränkisch production, and Eisenberg in the southeast yields structured, iron-inflected reds.

Though Burgenland built its reputation on red wines—Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, St. Laurent—the region also produces whites of substance and longevity. Grüner Veltliner, Austria's signature white variety, develops a fuller, riper expression here than in cooler regions like the Wachau. The warm climate and complex soils allow old-vine Grüner Veltliner to achieve depth and textural complexity rarely found elsewhere. Natural winemaking has flourished in Burgenland, with producers embracing biodynamic and minimal intervention practices.
