Tasting notes

At 12% ABV with Baga as the lead grape, this 2012 is the kind of structured, mineral-driven red that rewards patience — firm red-fruit acidity, a savoury earthy edge, and a long finish that's still showing life after more than a decade. The four-variety blend reflects exactly what the cool Atlantic-influenced soils around Leiria produce when left alone.

Quinta da Serradinha sits on the limestone slopes of Serra d'Aire near Leiria, about 17 kilometers from the Atlantic and 130 kilometers north of Lisbon. The vineyards, planted between 1952 and 1995, occupy south-facing clay-limestone hillsides within the Encostas d'Aire DOC. Atlantic breezes keep temperatures cool through the growing season, slowing ripening and preserving acidity and aromatic complexity.

This 2012 Vinho Tinto is a field blend of four indigenous varieties: Baga (50%), Castelao (25%), Touriga Nacional (15%), and Alfrocheiro (10%). Baga, the structural anchor, brings firm tannins and high natural acidity. Castelao adds red fruit and flesh; Touriga Nacional contributes floral lift and dark berry depth; Alfrocheiro rounds the mid-palate. At 12% ABV, this is the cooler, leaner style that Leiria's Atlantic climate produces — uncommon in Portugal and intentional here.

In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and foot-trodden in open oak vats. Fermentation is spontaneous, with no added yeasts or oenological products and no temperature control. António Marques da Cruz intentionally declassifies his wines to the Vinho Tinto designation rather than labeling under the broad Lisboa appellation. With over a decade of age on this 2012, the tannins have integrated and the wine has settled into a savoury, earthy register.

Quinta da Serradinha has been certified organic since 1994, making it among the first wine estates in Portugal to receive ecological certification. The estate farms approximately 6 hectares, with oldest vines trained in gobelet and younger parcels in guyot.

The wine's firm acidity and earthy character work well with slow-roasted lamb, suckling pig, or aged sheep's milk cheese. Try it with mushroom-based dishes or any preparation featuring bitter greens — the tannin structure needs fat or umami to open up. Roast duck with cherry sauce is a strong match for the wine's red fruit core.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Quinta da Serradinha

António Marques da Cruz is the fifth generation of his family to farm Quinta da Serradinha in Leiria, on the limestone slopes of Serra d'Aire, approximately 17 kilometers from the Atlantic coast. His grandfather planted the first vines on the estate between 1952 and 1967; his father added younger plantings in 1995. António began working alongside his father in 2003 and produced his first autonomous vintage in 2008. Total production is approximately 17,000 bottles per year across four red wines, one rosé, and two whites.

The estate has been certified organic since 1994, making Quinta da Serradinha among the first wine properties in Portugal to receive formal ecological certification. Organic practices began informally earlier, after António's father encountered organic farming methods at an agricultural fair in Montpellier in 1978. The approximately 6 hectares of vineyards are divided into plots on south-facing clay-limestone slopes, with ecological barriers between parcels. Oldest vines are trained in gobelet; younger parcels in guyot.

In the cellar, grapes are destemmed and foot-trodden. Red wines ferment in open oak vats with spontaneous native yeast fermentation, no added oenological products, and no temperature control, with maceration lasting 6 to 15 days. Baga-dominant wines can age up to seven years before bottling. António deliberately declassifies all wines to Vinho Tinto or Vinho Branco rather than using the Lisboa DOC designation.

Wine region

Lisboa, Portugal

Encostas d'Aire is a DOC located at the northern end of the wider Lisboa wine region, on the limestone hills of Serra d'Aire. The DOC was elevated from IPR status in 2005, when the Alcobaça subregion was also merged in. Vineyards spread across the municipalities of Batalha, Porto de Mos, Ourem, Leiria, and Pombal. The climate sits in transition between the humid, wind-driven Atlantic west and the drier continental influence from the east. High annual rainfall, cool mornings, and dry summers give the region a slow, even ripening season that tends to produce wines with lower alcohol and higher natural acidity than warmer Portuguese regions.

The region's principal grape varieties include Arinto, Baga, Fernao Pires, Castelao, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Miuda, and Alfrocheiro for red and white wines. Soils are predominantly limestone-based with variations of clay and sand across different parcels. Red wines from Encostas d'Aire are typically ruby in color, relatively light in body, with fruit and earthy aromatics and firm tannins that soften with bottle age. António Marques da Cruz declines to label under the Lisboa DOC, which he considers too broad, releasing his wines simply as Vinho Tinto.
