Producer profile

Mas del Perié

Mas del Périé, led by Fabien Jouves, is a natural wine estate in Cahors, southwestern France. Established in 2006, Fabien comes from a long line of farmers and has transformed his family's estate into one of the region's most innovative and acclaimed wineries. The winery sits on the high limestone plateau of Cahors, where Malbec (also known as Côt) reigns as the primary grape.

Fabien practices biodynamic farming, certified by Demeter, and uses natural methods in the vineyard and cellar. He emphasizes the expression of terroir through sélection parcellaire, treating each vineyard plot differently to highlight its unique characteristics. His wines are vinified with native yeasts and minimal intervention, fermenting in concrete tanks, foudres, amphorae, and sometimes in eggs, without additives.

Mas del Périé is best known for its bold yet elegant Malbec-based wines, like Les Escures, which showcases the freshness and purity of fruit, and more experimental cuvées like Amphore and Haute Côt(e) de Fruit, which push the boundaries of traditional Cahors winemaking. Fabien also creates lighter "vins de soif" wines, which are easy-drinking, fun expressions that embody his dynamic approach to winemaking. His efforts have helped elevate the profile of Cahors and brought a modern touch to this historic appellation

Wine region

Cahors, France

The Cahors wine region in southwestern France is historically renowned as the birthplace of Malbec, also known locally as Côt. This appellation, situated along the Lot River, boasts a winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times when it was celebrated for producing rich, dark red wines. Cahors remains defined by its distinctive terroir, which includes limestone plateaus and gravelly riverbanks, creating ideal conditions for Malbec to thrive.

Malbec in Cahors is known for its intense, tannic profile. It offers flavors of black fruits, spices, and earthy notes and has excellent aging potential. Cahors Malbec retains a more structured, complex character, unlike its Argentine counterpart, which tends to be fruit-forward and soft. Traditionally, these wines were powerful and deeply colored, earning the nickname "black wine."

In recent years, a new generation of winemakers, such as Fabien Jouves of Mas del Périé, has breathed fresh life into the region by experimenting with biodynamic farming, minimal intervention techniques, and alternative aging vessels like amphorae. This movement has elevated Cahors's reputation, showcasing modern, drinkable "vins de soif" and more age-worthy expressions of Malbec that reflect the region's diversity of terroirs.
