Tasting notes

This is a genuinely light, high-acid California red built around old-vine Carignan from Solano County's Green Valley and Mendocino, where dry-farmed vines in sandy loam soils produce concentrated, bright fruit. Carbonic fermentation on the Carignan and Grenache Noir gives the wine its juicy, fruit-forward character without weight, landing closer to a cru Beaujolais than anything you would expect from a seven-variety California red blend.

  • Winemaking: Native yeast fermentation; Carignan and Grenache Noir fermented carbonic; remaining varieties destemmed in open-top stainless steel; aged in neutral French oak and concrete tanks; little to no added SO2
  • Serving: Serve at 58-62F; no decanting needed; best within 2-3 years of vintage
  • Pairing: Roast chicken, charcuterie, pork tenderloin, hard cheese, grilled sausage
  • Similar To: For fans of Beaujolais cru, Loire Gamay, or light Grenache who want a California old-vine alternative

The 2021 Love Red is a seven-variety blend led by 51% Carignan, with 25% Syrah, 12% Valdiguié, 5% Mourvèdre, 3% Zinfandel, 2% Petite Sirah, and 2% Grenache Noir. Grapes come from dry-farmed, head-pruned old vines in Solano County's Green Valley (Wirth Vineyard) and Mendocino County, with most sites farming organically. The wine is labeled under the North Coast AVA, reflecting its multi-county sourcing.

Grapes are harvested early to hold onto acidity and keep alcohol modest at 12.5%. The Carignan and Grenache Noir were fermented carbonic. The Syrah, Valdiguié, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, and Zinfandel were destemmed and fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks with native yeasts only. No nutrients, enzymes, or commercial yeast were added at any stage. The wine was aged in a combination of neutral French oak barrels and concrete tanks, then bottled with little to no added SO2.

On the nose, expect ripe wild berries, dried cranberry, and a floral lift. The palate is juicy with crunchy red and blue fruit, rhubarb, a cut-herb edge, and a lightly spiced finish. Soft tannins and medium-plus acidity make it easy to drink now, and it works well with a slight chill.

Broc Cellars is an urban winery in Berkeley, California founded by Chris Brockway. The Love Red is the flagship of their Love Collection, a lineup built around organically farmed, under-recognized California grape varieties sourced from small family-owned vineyards across the state.

The low tannins and bright acidity make this flexible at the table. It works well with roast chicken, charcuterie, pork tenderloin, or a plate of hard cheeses. Serve slightly chilled at around 58-62F for best results.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Broc Cellars

Broc Cellars was founded in 2002 by Chris Brockway, a Nebraska native who completed his oenology degree at Fresno State before settling in the Bay Area. The winery operates out of two warehouse spaces in Berkeley's Gilman District and produces around 20,000 cases per year. Brockway's early exposure to natural wine at San Francisco's first natural wine bar, Terroir, shaped the direction of the project from the start.

Broc sources exclusively from organically farmed, family-owned vineyards across California, working with sites in Solano County, Mendocino County, Paso Robles, and beyond. In 2021, Brockway took over farming operations at Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino, a 60-acre site planted largely to Italian varieties, and purchased the property outright in 2023. Fox Hill received CCOF certified organic status in 2024.

All fermentations at Broc use only native yeasts and bacteria present on the grapes. No nutrients, commercial yeast, enzymes, or tannins are added at any stage. Sulfur is not added during fermentation or aging; a small amount is added at bottling on select wines depending on style and vintage. Fruit is harvested at lower brix levels to preserve natural acidity and keep alcohol moderate, a deliberate departure from the high-extraction, high-alcohol style that defined much of California winemaking before Broc's generation.

Wine region

North Coast, USA

The North Coast AVA covers more than three million acres across six counties north of San Francisco: Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, and Solano. The designation is most commonly used for wines that blend fruit from multiple counties within this zone, as is the case with Broc's Love Red. The region's defining climatic feature is the moderating influence of Pacific fog and coastal breezes, which extend the growing season and help grapes retain natural acidity even in warm years.

Solano County's Green Valley AVA, one of the key sources for Love Red, sits about 12 miles northeast of San Pablo Bay in a small north-south valley between the Vaca Mountains and the Napa county line. The alluvial soils are largely sandy loam, free-draining, and low-fertility, which stresses vines and concentrates flavors. Evening fog pulls in from San Pablo Bay and cools the vineyards overnight, slowing ripening and preserving acidity. Mendocino County, the other main source for this wine, is California's northernmost major wine-growing county and is particularly known for organically farmed vineyards and heritage plantings of varieties like Carignan.
