The Wine: Sun Red 2014
Sun is a red Greek natural wine made from Limniona (50%) and Xinomavro (50%) native grapes farmed organically - Kontozisis winery has been certified organic since 1991. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, three weeks of skin contact, bottled unfiltered with the addition of a tiny quantity of sulfites. Kontozisis Sun Red has two souls: elegant and clean but also rustic and earthy. The two indigenous grape varietals Limniona and Xinomavro show in full for a brilliant result. Drink now.
The Producer: Kontozisis
Kontozisis is a family-owned winery operated by partners Andrea Kontozisis and Aphrodite Tousia who have been practicing organic agriculture and organic vinification since 1991. Kontozisis, comprising of 11 hectares of vineyards, is one of the first certified organic wineries in Greece. Andrea and Aphrodite are totally committed to sustainability both in the vineyards and in the cellar.
They are passionate about working with indigenous grape varietals such as Roditis and Limniona. For Limniona, they have developed a proprietary vine-tending technique in order to get as much concentration as possible from the variety’s large grapes. At Kontozisis, all grapes are hand harvested and pruned, yields are kept very low to maximize quality. No presses and no commercial yeasts are used during winemaking.
The Region: Karditsa, Thessaly
Kontozisis is located in Karditsa, a rural town in the region of Thessaly, right in the middle of Greece. Karditsa is known for being particularly bicycle-friendly: residents use bicycles as their main means of transportation, riding freely on the many bike paths all around the region.
The Terroir of Karditsa
The terroir of Karditsa is heavily influenced by the Agrafa mountains and the artificial Plastira lake. Other rock formations near Karditsa are the so-called Meteora rocks, punctuated by ancient monasteries.
