Tasting notes

This Rossese is a textbook expression of western Liguria: light ruby color, rose-petal and fresh raspberry aromatics, dry and savory on the palate with fine tannins and a clean bitter finish. It drinks more like a structured rosé than a typical red, which makes it genuinely versatile at the table.

Cascina Fèipu dei Massaretti's Rossese is made from 100% Rossese Nero, an indigenous black-skinned grape grown in Albenga in the Savona province of Liguria. This variety is genetically distinct from the Rossese of Dolceacqua and has been cultivated along the western Ligurian coast since at least the 16th century. The wine falls under the Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC, a broad appellation covering much of the Ligurian coastline.

The vineyards around Albenga sit on predominantly flat, sandy alluvial soils with a clay-calcareous component on the hillside parcels. The Mediterranean microclimate brings mild winters and hot summers, moderated by sea breezes during the day and cooler land winds at night. This diurnal shift helps the grapes retain natural acidity. The estate covers roughly 6 hectares, of which 5.2 are owned and 0.8 are leased. Farming follows integrated pest management practices with limitations on pesticide use.

Winemaking is traditional: red vinification in stainless steel with daily pump-overs and cap breaks, pressing and racking after 5 to 7 days of maceration. The wine is aged in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before bottling. No oak is used. The result is a dry, savory red with ruby color, aromas of rose, raspberry, and strawberry, and a characteristic bitter finish typical of the variety.

The 2019 vintage from Liguria was generally warm and dry, producing concentrated fruit with natural freshness retained through the region's coastal winds. Rossese is best enjoyed young and slightly chilled, showcasing its bright acidity and light tannin structure.

Serve at 58-61°F alongside rabbit with Taggiasca olives, a classic Ligurian pairing. Also works well with stewed stockfish, grilled branzino, or chicken braised in white wine. Medium-aged cheeses like Pecorino Sardo are a straightforward match.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Possa

Cascina Fèipu dei Massaretti is located in Albenga, Savona province, in the Riviera Ligure di Ponente. Agostino Parodi, known as Pippo, founded the estate in the 1960s by converting his father Filippo's orchards to viticulture. The name combines 'Fèipu,' the local dialect rendering of Filippo, with the locality name Massaretti. Since there were no recognized Ligurian appellations at the time, Pippo named the estate after his father and their land. The winery was among the first in Liguria to bottle and sell wines beyond the regional market, and Pippo and Bice received the Slow Food Award in 2003 for their contributions to Ligurian gastronomic culture.

Son-in-law Mirco Mastroianni joined the cantina in 1997, overseeing a rebuilding of the cellar and a measured increase in production. Today the estate is run by the Parodi daughters, Ivana and Brunella, and their families, with Daniela Serra as the winemaker. The estate covers approximately 6 hectares — 5.2 owned and 0.8 leased — of which most are flat and sandy-alluvial, with a clay-calcareous hillside component. Farming follows community programs for limitation and containment of pesticide use; the estate has not declared full biological certification. Annual production is approximately 60,000 to 70,000 bottles across Pigato, Rossese, and Granaccia.

The Rossese is vinified traditionally in stainless steel with daily pump-overs and cap breaks throughout a 5-to-7-day maceration. After pressing and racking, the wine is aged in temperature-controlled stainless steel before bottling. No oak is used at any stage, which preserves the variety's aromatic freshness and the characteristic savory-bitter finish.

Wine region

Liguria, Italy

Liguria is a narrow arc of land in northwestern Italy, stretching roughly 350 km along the coast of the Ligurian Sea between France and Tuscany. The terrain is almost entirely hilly to mountainous, with vineyards planted on terraces and steep slopes where mechanization is difficult or impossible. The Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC covers the western half of this coast, from Genova toward the French border, and authorizes both white and red wines from native varieties including Pigato, Vermentino, Rossese, and Granaccia.

The Albenga plain, where Cascina Fèipu dei Massaretti is based, is one of the few genuinely flat stretches in Liguria, formed by alluvial deposits from the Centa River. These sandy alluvial soils produce delicately perfumed wines with softer structure than those from the clay-calcareous hillside parcels further inland. The Mediterranean microclimate is defined by mild winters, dry summers, and a consistent pattern of sea breezes by day and cooler land air at night, which preserves acidity in the grapes. Rossese Nero, the variety used here, is distinct from the Rossese of Dolceacqua further west, which DNA analysis has identified as identical to the Provençal variety Tibouren.
