Tasting notes

Despite being a second-pressing piquette at 7% ABV, the Gewurztraminer skins still deliver recognizable lychee and rose aromatics with a ginger-tinged finish. The organic lemon juice addition gives it a citrusy snap that keeps the whole thing lively and dry rather than flat or watery.

Miha Piquette is a collaborative project between Dan Marioni of Marioni Wines and Jack Sporer of Fres.co (Fresh Wine Co.), both Sonoma natives making wine together at Magnolia Wine Services, a collective custom crush facility in Sonoma. This is a piquette: a traditional low-alcohol beverage made by adding water to spent grape pomace. Here, that means the second pressing of organically and regeneratively farmed Gewurztraminer skins and pumice, with spring water and organic lemon juice added for acidity. It is then conditioned with fresh Gewurztraminer juice to trigger refermentation in the bottle, resulting in a sparkling, lively wine at 7% ABV.

The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with zero added sulfur dioxide, a zero-zero production by any measure. Gewurztraminer's highly aromatic pink-skinned grape contributes its characteristic lychee, rose petal, and ginger profile even at this second-pressing stage, while the organic lemon juice addition keeps the wine bright and structured despite its low alcohol. The result is dry, gently fizzy, and more alive on the palate than its modest ABV suggests.

Piquette has roots going back to 18th-century France, where it was traditionally consumed by vineyard laborers as a low-cost, low-alcohol shift drink. The natural wine world has revived the format as a way to extract a second product from the grape pomace without waste. Dan and Jack's version fits squarely in that tradition while reflecting the Sonoma Valley regenerative farming ethos that both producers share.

The ginger and lychee notes in the Gewurztraminer base make this a natural alongside Thai green curry, Vietnamese spring rolls, or Moroccan-spiced chicken. It works equally well as a low-alcohol aperitif with a soft cow's milk cheese and fresh fruit. Keep it well chilled and drink it soon after opening.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Dan and Jack

Dan Marioni is a fifth-generation Sonoma Valley native who makes wine under the Marioni Wines label. He apprenticed under the Coturri family, widely regarded as pioneers of natural winemaking in California, before establishing his own zero-intervention project focused on Sonoma Mountain and Sonoma Valley fruit. His estate vineyards are located primarily within the Sonoma Mountain AVA, with additional sites in Sonoma Valley and Petaluma Gap.

Jack Sporer is the founder of Fres.co (originally named Fresh Wine Company) and the operator of Magnolia Wine Services, a cooperative custom crush facility in Sonoma that serves as a hub for a collective of low-intervention winemakers in the region. Sporer worked harvests across five countries before returning to Sonoma to build both a natural wine label and a shared production infrastructure that enables smaller producers to work without conventional additives or inputs.

Both producers source exclusively from organically and regeneratively farmed vineyards, working with growers to transition away from synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and irrigation toward no-till, dry-farming, and cover cropping practices. Their collaboration under the Dan and Jack name applies these same principles to piquette production: regeneratively farmed Gewurztraminer pumice, spring water, organic lemon juice, native-yeast refermentation on fresh Gewurztraminer juice, and bottling without fining, filtration, or added sulfur dioxide.

Wine region

Sonoma Valley, United States

Sonoma Valley is a roughly 17-mile-long appellation in southern Sonoma County, running from the town of Sonoma north toward Santa Rosa, flanked by the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and the Sonoma Mountains to the west. The valley's varied elevations and marine influence from San Pablo Bay to the south create a wide range of microclimates. The Sonoma Mountain AVA, one of several sub-appellations within the county, sits at higher elevations above the valley floor and provides cooler conditions with well-drained soils suited to a variety of grape varieties including Gewurztraminer.

Sonoma County contains more than a dozen distinct AVAs, from the cool, fog-heavy Sonoma Coast to the warmer interior of Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. The county is known for its commitment to organic and sustainable farming, with a growing number of growers transitioning to regenerative practices that prioritize soil health, dry farming, and the elimination of synthetic inputs. Gewurztraminer, an aromatic pink-skinned variety with origins in the Traminer village of Alto Adige, is grown across cooler pockets of California, where it produces drier, more spice-forward expressions than its Alsatian counterparts.
