Tasting notes

Sumoll is one of the rarest indigenous Catalan reds in existence, and this is about as pure an expression of it as you will find: bright cranberry and blackberry fruit, high snappy acidity, an herbal, earthy undercurrent, and almost no weight on the palate. The 1-liter zero-sulfite format makes it the kind of bottle you open on a Tuesday and finish without thinking about it.

Clos Lentiscus sits at 740 feet (225m) in Sant Pere de Ribes, within the Garraf sub-zone of Penedes DO, Catalunya. The estate, known as Can Ramon, has operated since the 14th century. The Sumoll vines used for this wine were planted in 1939 on calcareous sand soils with shallow topsoil containing marine fossils, within a 10-hectare block of estate vineyards. The farm is certified organic by CCPAE and biodynamic by Demeter. Plowing is done with a horse named Ringo; sheep graze to control weeds; lunar cycles govern all vineyard operations.

The grapes were hand-harvested and macerated on the skins with whole clusters for 15 days. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts took place in old oak foudres and clay amphorae. The wine stayed in those vessels for approximately 1.5 years after harvest, was then blended and bottled as a 1-liter format, unfined, unfiltered, with zero added sulfites. Manel Aviño eliminated sulfur from all his wines entirely after his wife was diagnosed with stomach cancer and could not tolerate them.

Sumoll is a rare indigenous Catalan red grape that once covered more ground in Catalonia than Garnacha. After near-extinction following phylloxera and the post-EU shift toward international varieties, only scattered plantings remain. The variety is drought-resistant, low-yielding, and known for high acidity, pale-to-medium color, and aromas of tart red fruit, earth, and scrub herbs. The Litrona format (1 liter) is central to Clos Lentiscus's low-intervention project for this wine. Only 500 cases were produced for this vintage.

Serve lightly chilled at 55-60F. No decant needed. Drink now through 2025.

The high acidity and light body make this a natural match for fatty, rich foods: grilled sardines or mackerel, charcuterie, Catalan-style white beans with butifarra sausage, or a simple tomato bread with aged Manchego. Serve lightly chilled and treat it like a Beaujolais-weight red.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Clos Lentiscus

The family estate Can Ramon, now home to Clos Lentiscus, was founded in the 14th century in Sant Pere de Ribes near Sitges. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, it had an active trade selling wines to France and the American colonies, but phylloxera, the Spanish Civil War, and industrialization led to its decline. By the time brothers Manel and Joan Aviño inherited the property after their father died in 2001, the land had been conventionally farmed and the fruit sold rather than made into wine. Manel and Joan returned to the estate with the goal of restoring it to its former condition under the Clos Lentiscus label. Today the estate is run by Manel and his daughter Nuria.

The estate covers approximately 20 hectares at 225 meters above sea level, certified organic by CCPAE and biodynamic by Demeter. Farming follows lunar cycles for planting, pruning, harvesting, and bottling. No pesticides or herbicides are used. The estate keeps beehives for pollination, uses sheep to fertilize the soil and control weeds, and plows with a horse. Manel eliminated sulfites from all wines entirely after his wife was diagnosed with stomach cancer and could no longer tolerate them in any cuvee.

In the cellar, Manel works with native yeasts exclusively, adds no enzymes or other additives, and bottles all wines unfined and unfiltered. For the Litrona Sumoll, whole-cluster skin maceration runs for 15 days, fermentation and aging take place in old oak foudres and clay amphorae for approximately 1.5 years post-harvest, and the wine is then blended and bottled in a 1-liter format with zero added sulfites. Clos Lentiscus is also known for its biodynamic sparkling wines made from indigenous Catalan varieties.

Wine region

Penedes, Spain

Penedes DO is located in the coastal hills of Catalunya, southwest of Barcelona, framed by the Garraf Massif to the south and the higher inland mountains to the north. The region divides into three climatic sub-zones: Baix Penedes, a low-lying coastal zone; the Penedes Central at 250-500 meters; and the Alt Penedes, which rises to 800 meters above sea level. Clos Lentiscus sits in the Garraf zone of Baix Penedes near the town of Sitges and Sant Pere de Ribes, where Mediterranean sea breezes moderate temperatures. The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild winters; annual rainfall is moderate, concentrated in spring and autumn.

The soils across Penedes are highly varied, ranging from sandy clay to limestone to Miocene marine sediments. The Garraf sub-zone specifically sits on a calcareous mass with shallow soils containing marine fossils, which contribute a pronounced mineral character to the wines grown there. Penedes is best known internationally as the heartland of Cava production, with indigenous white grapes Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada dominating plantings. Red grape varieties including Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Sumoll also grow throughout the region. As of the 2025 harvest, Penedes became the first wine appellation in the world to achieve 100% certified organic production across all its vineyards.
