Tasting notes

The whole-bunch co-fermentation gives this Pinot Noir-dominant blend a spicy, stem-driven quality that sets it apart from conventionally made New Zealand Pinot — think crushed red cherry, dried herbs, and a grip that comes from structure rather than extraction. The Gewurztraminer top-up adds a faint rose-petal note without tipping the wine into aromatics territory.

Invierno is a red wine from Alex Craighead's Kindeli project in Upper Moutere, Nelson, on the northwestern tip of New Zealand's South Island. The blend is approximately 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Gris, grown on Moutere Series clay-bound gravel soils and farmed organically. The name translates to "winter" in Spanish.

Whole bunches of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are co-fermented for three days before pressing into neutral oak barrels. The barrels are topped with Gewurztraminer. After several months of aging, the wine is racked and bottled without sulfur, fining, or filtration.

The result is a lighter-bodied red with spicy, stalky character from the whole-bunch fermentation, a fine-boned tannic structure, and the kind of crunchy acidity that Upper Moutere clay soils reliably produce in Pinot Noir. The Gewurztraminer addition adds a faint aromatic lift without showing prominently in the final blend.

No sulfur is added at any stage. The wine is sealed with carbon-neutral Nomacorc closures made from sugarcane byproducts and bottled by gravity on-site.

Serve slightly chilled at around 55-58F. The wine's crunchy acidity and light tannin structure work well with charcuterie, roast chicken, or dishes with earthy components like lentils or mushrooms. Its whole-bunch spice also holds up to mild heat, making it a practical match for grilled lamb kofta or a simple tomato-based pasta.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Kindeli

Alex Craighead and Josefina Venturino founded Kindeli in Martinborough in 2014, initially making zero-sulfur wines because, as they have noted, there were few natural wine options available in New Zealand at the time. Craighead studied oenology at Lincoln University in Christchurch and subsequently worked in regions including Marlborough, Burgundy, Barbaresco, Barolo, Central Otago, the Okanagan Valley, and the Yarra Valley before returning to New Zealand to make wine under his own label.

The Kindeli operation is now based in Upper Moutere, where Craighead farms approximately 11 hectares across four vineyards — a mix of owned and leased parcels — with soil types ranging from Moutere Series clay to gravel and silt. Varieties on the home block include Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Farming is organic: inputs are limited to sulfur, seaweed, compost, bat guano, and copper applied only when necessary. Each spring before veraison, a neighboring flock of sheep is brought in to graze the grass and remove leaves around the young grape clusters, improving canopy airflow and reducing rot pressure.

In the winery, Craighead is rigorous about hygiene to prevent brett, mouse taint, and volatile acidity without resorting to conventional additives. Fermentations use a native yeast starter culture prepared from crushed estate fruit. Vessels include stainless steel tanks, neutral oak barrels, polyethylene vats, and clay amphora tinajas. Finished wines are bottled by gravity, sealed with carbon-neutral Nomacorc closures made from sugarcane, and released unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur.

Wine region

Nelson, New Zealand

Upper Moutere sits in the Moutere Hills subregion of Nelson, on the northwestern end of New Zealand's South Island. The area lies between the Richmond Range to the east and the Arthur Range to the west, and its defining geological feature is Moutere Series clay-bound gravel — ancient sediment deposited by long-vanished river systems and eroded into gently rolling hills. These low-fertility soils encourage deep root growth and produce wines with notable structure and concentration relative to their modest yields.

Nelson records roughly 2,400 to 2,500 sunshine hours per year, among the highest of any New Zealand wine region, with a maritime climate moderated by Tasman Bay. The Moutere Hills produce Pinot Noir with more tannic structure and weight than the alluvial Waimea Plains to the east. The region also supports a range of aromatic whites, including Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer, several of which Alex Craighead grows and uses across his Kindeli lineup. Nelson accounts for roughly 3% of New Zealand's total vineyard area and is home to approximately 40 boutique producers.
