Tasting notes

Piedirosso vinified as a pure single-varietal is rare, and I Pentri's Kerres is one of the benchmark examples from inland Campania. The 2011 brings raspberry, sour cherry, violet, and a savory herbal-mineral edge that reads more like a serious terroir wine than the soft blending grape Piedirosso is usually treated as. At this age, the fruit has knit with the oak and the acidity still holds the whole thing together.

Kerres is 100% Piedirosso from I Pentri's estate vineyards in the Sannio Beneventano, bottled under the Beneventano IGT. The grapes come from terraced hillside plots across Guardia Sanframondi, Castelvenere, and Vitulano, situated between Monte Taburno and the southeastern edge of the Matese range. Soils here are calcareous clay and marly limestone, distinct from the volcanic soils associated with Piedirosso grown closer to Vesuvius or the Campi Flegrei.

Piedirosso is an ancient Campanian variety whose name refers to the red-colored pedicels of its grape clusters, resembling a pigeon's foot. In the Sannio, it produces deeper-colored, more structured wines than in coastal zones, with greater tannin presence and resinous, smoky aromatic nuances alongside the variety's signature red fruit and floral character. The 2011 vintage received a 92-point score on Wine-Searcher, one of the stronger showings across the Kerres lineup.

In the cellar, I Pentri macerate the Piedirosso in stainless steel, then age the wine in French oak for approximately one year. The wine is fermented with wild yeasts, bottled unfined and unfiltered. No chemical agents or mechanical processes are used in winemaking.

Expect a dry, medium-bodied red with ruby color, lifted acidity, and soft but present tannins. Aromas run toward raspberry, sour cherry, violet, dried herbs, and a mineral-earthy undercurrent. At this stage of bottle age, tertiary notes of tobacco and earth have likely integrated alongside the fruit.

The wine's lively acidity and savory herb character make it well-suited to roasted pork, herb-crusted chicken, and braised rabbit. It also works alongside aged pecorino or caciocavallo, and holds up to dishes built around earthy ingredients like mushrooms and lentils. Classic Campanian pairings include sausage with broccoli rabe or pasta al ragu of lamb.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

I Pentri

I Pentri was founded in 2002 by husband-and-wife team Dionisio Meola and Lia Falato in the municipality of Castelvenere, Benevento. The name references the ancient Samnite tribe that historically populated this part of inland Campania. The winery's first commercial vintage was 2002, built on vineyard land inherited from the family's grandparents. Their son Alessandro Meola now works alongside them in both vineyard and cellar.

The estate farms 10 hectares of terraced hillside vineyards spread across Guardia Sanframondi, Castelvenere, and Vitulano, positioned between Monte Taburno and the southeastern Matese. All vineyards are certified organic and farmed with biodynamic practices. Grapes are harvested by hand. No herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers are used at any stage.

Winemaking at I Pentri follows a minimal-intervention approach. Reds are fermented with wild indigenous yeasts; whites use indigenous yeasts as well. The Kerres Piedirosso undergoes maceration in stainless steel, followed by approximately one year of aging in French oak barrels. Wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, with no chemical agents or mechanical processing used in the cellar.

Wine region

Campania, Italy

Sannio Beneventano is an inland wine zone in the province of Benevento, in northern Campania, roughly an hour east of Naples. The province accounts for approximately 50 percent of all wine production in Campania, with around 10,000 hectares under vine across about 100 bottling companies. The landscape is defined by hilly terrain framed by mountains to the north and south, including Monte Taburno and the Matese range, which drive significant diurnal temperature variation and airflow through the vineyards. This continental interior climate differentiates Sannio from the coastal and volcanic zones of Naples and Vesuvius.

Soils across Sannio are predominantly clay and calcareous limestone, with some volcanic influence in the Vitulanese, Telesina, and Galdina sub-areas; the northeastern sector has no volcanic component. The principal appellations are Aglianico del Taburno DOCG, Falanghina del Sannio DOC, and the broader Sannio DOC, alongside the more flexible Beneventano IGT classification. Falanghina and Aglianico are the most widely planted varieties, but Piedirosso has a long documented presence in the zone and is used as a single-varietal wine within the Sannio DOC and its sub-areas including Taburno, Sant'Agata dei Goti, Solopaca, and Guardiolo.
